A chaotic weather story dominates as upstate New York endures a blizzard and record cold. Bridgeport and surrounding towns face plunging temps with zero readings. two fires force five families from homes amid icy conditions. A blaze at 738 Boston Avenue injures no one, but a lamp cord fault is blamed for the Smiths' fire.
A fierce blizzard battered upstate New York with drifts up to 15 feet and winds over 50 mph. The 275 mile Thruway from Albany to Buffalo shut down as hundreds were stranded. At least 10 deaths reported as Utica Syracuse and other cities declared emergencies and more snow was forecast.

San Antonio reports Donald G. Farrell a 23 year old airman from the Bronx began a simulated voyage to space at Randolph Air Force Base. He will spend seven days in an experimental space cabinet modeled to mimic conditions a real astronaut would endure on a satellite or lunar flight. If he endures the full test he joins space pioneers, as volunteers previously managed only 24 hours at a stretch.
Soviet Moscow dispatch says Khrushchev may move to sideline Premier Bulganin as election constituencies are set for the Supreme Soviet ballot. Bulganin holds a Moscow seat in the less powerful Nationalities Chamber while Khrushchev sits in the Union Chamber from Moscow.
Bernard Schwartz said he will be fired within 24 hours as counsel to a House subcommittee probing the FCC. He denies wrongdoing, claims expense accounts are in order, and says powerful interests aim to smear him and derail the inquiry. He expects a vote at a closed session, planning to fight is not possible.
Bridgeport detectives are investigating eight weekend breaks in homes and businesses with three cases yielding exact items taken. The Greek Coffee Shop at 310 State Street was entered by a rear door with $25 stolen. Holland Bowling Alleys at 1278 Main Street lost contents from a vending machine. Ameco Service Station at Howard and North avenues reported a window entry and several new tires missing. Other sites under review include Wheeler Auto Repair at 1564 Madison Avenue Atlantic Service Station at 390 Main Street East, end Oil & Coal at 1450 Vacium Avenue Joseph Micalizzi home at 109 Rocton Avenue and Nicholas Cisero home at 37 Garden Drive.
State Police said a Bridgeport man may have set a speed record on the Connecticut Turnpike by clocking 105 mph before being arrested on a reckless driving charge. Trooper James McGrath flagged down Arthur J. Harding, 33, of 1811 North Avenue near the Milford Orange line. Harding to appear in Town Court February 27.
Sikorsky Aircraft union employees at local plants voted 2048 to 14 in favor of strike action if no satisfactory contract is reached by midnight Saturday. The tally, certified by Thomas V. Kaskie, was cast by 2969 workers at Stratford High School gym, with negotiations in Hartford resuming Wednesday and another session set for Thursday.
Hartford reports Gov Ribicoff will meet with legislative leaders to decide on a possible special session addressing unemployment. Mayors urge action to ease unemployment benefits processing, extend payment periods, and boost compensation. In Washington, Knowland signals readiness to activate a public works program if the recession deepens, with Humphrey urging action now.
The Sunday Graphic said the Soviet Union would launch its third earth satellite with more instruments than the first two. It also claimed a manned flight later this year, with a winged container that could circle the atmosphere’s edge to reenter. In Washington, Major John B. Medaris predicted an Army satellite launch between tomorrow and April 1, following Explorer, with similar size and enhanced instruments.
FBI agents and police arrested three Waterbury youths in a plush Sands hotel suite in Miami Beach after a predawn raid found 336 dollars in cash in a suitcase. John George Wallace 19 Michael A Berardi 18 and Meron F Gale 13 were taken without a struggle. A fourth man closely tied to the case Lola Sullivan 54 was arrested in Waterbury following the East End Colonial Trust Bank robbery. A 20 year old Waterbury woman Roberta Darcy is held as witness. The bank tally showed about 20201 dollars taken by the youths.
Prime Minister Macmillan signaled willingness to join a high level East West summit to aid world peace. He told Soviet Premier Bulganin a meeting of heads of government could yield positive results with advance planning and the right to submit proposals. A U S State Department spokesman said the reply satisfactory for stressing preparation.
Stratford police halted a burglary attempt at the Stratford Town Fair last night when two men on a roof leaped to the ground and fled toward railroad tracks. Officers Freeman and Szabo pursued, one man limped, and a waiting car was believed used for escape. Nearby towns were alerted.
