Budget Hearing Finds 22 Oppose Cuts in City Budget
At City hall last night 24 speakers addressed the Board of Apportionment and Taxation opening budget hearing. Most opposed the proposed cuts to education while two supported them. The comptroller's overall budget totals 38,662,785 with a 1.9 mill tax rise to 47.5 mills, and the school budget stands at 12,901,586, above last year but below the board of education requests when teacher pay increases are included. The Rev. Charles R. Gordon of the Bridgeport Stratford NAACP blasted the cuts as ridiculous and urged restoration, calling them short changing the children. A moderate view came from Francis V. Donovan of the Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce, who supported the budget while urging limits on increases for school services and maintenance. The report notes the budget aims to balance education costs with the tax rate as calls continue.
