Shell Makers in England Speed Up Order to Somme

Two days after the big drive began, 5000 shells were produced to reach British gunners in time for the first counter-attack. The Manchester district, including Westmorland, Cumberland, Lancashire, North Wales, and Isle of Man, transformed textile plants into a vast war munitions complex. Lloyd-George urged immediate output in June 1915, guiding firms to use existing resources for rapid shell production and expanding into airplanes, vehicles, guns, mortars, grenades, mines, engines, and other munitions. Within ten miles of Manchester City Hall, 2.5 million people generate 1.6 million horsepower, with 80 percent devoted to war munitions.
