Bridgeport Faces Loss of Shade Trees Amid Decline
Bridgeport officials warn the city may lose its famed shaded avenues as 591 trees were cut in 1924, more than earlier years. Parks Superintendent Henry Cliffe cites demand from businesses and residents, noting only a few dozen new trees planted along highways in two years. A city nursery will produce stock locally at a cost, with plans to plant maples, pin oak, white ash, ginkgo, elms and lindens. Gas stations and homes have driven tree removals, despite attempts to halt cuts at Park and State streets.
