Engineer Beach Dead When Fairfield Wreck Occurred
New Haven June 9 C N Woodward, superintendent of the Shore Line Division, investigated the quadruple freight train wreck at Fairfield on Tuesday in which five trainmen died. Survivors, except the injured in Bridgeport hospitals, testified. A circulating story blamed Engineer Lester Beach for death before the wreck, citing missed signals and torpedo explosions. Beach’s health and absence of Bright’s disease were cited, but friends cannot explain his failure to observe signals. Officials did not reveal when findings would be public.

Cruelty ruling in custody case amid Bethune dispute
In October 1900 the witness says Bethune treated Mrs Bethune cruelly harming her health. He allegedly shut her out of their New York hotel apartments, leaving her to sit up all night. On another occasion he sent a revolver, frightening her. The witness says Bethune left her several times, last in August 1908, and she pursued him with Pinkerton detectives but could not reclaim him. She still loves her son, answering a judge’s question. Other testimony noted fainting during an interview and health ruin from the husband’s conduct. Judge Burpee granted a cruelty grounds decree after hearing the testimony. OBITUARY John Ryan, 19, of Bridgeport, a teamster, died after pneumonia. He is survived by his father.
