The Penitentiary Trustees report favorable progress at Rankin Farm with a fair cotton crop prospect. Corn will be late due to rain, but expected to recover after a few favorable days. Maj Pat Henry attended the Jefferson Davis birthday celebration in the Old Capitol rotunda Jackson Sunday afternoon. Judge Garland Lyell presided, music by an orchestra directed by Mrs Yerger, and Hon Fred Lotterhas spoke on Davis life. The statue, once outside, was moved inside to preserve it, following a petition by the United Confederate Veterans adopted by state officials.

Episcopalians Plan Endowment Campaign Visit Mississippi
A Jackson delegation led by T. S. Holmes and including W. A. Montgomery A. C. Walthall and J. M. Moore visited the Episcopal Church in the city Sunday to promote a 360000 Endowment Campaign for religious education in Mississippi. The drive targets church schools including All Saints College at Vicksburg and some Negro schools. Regular services followed the talks with Rector Val. H. Sessions presiding and a committee named to solicit subscriptions. The sermon drew a good congregation and a big day is set for June 10 to celebrate the Rector’s ordination anniversary.

A fire broke out Wednesday night in one of the dry kilns at the Appolonia Mill in Pelahatchie. Whistles and shrieks drew residents to the scene. The blaze damaged roofs and pipes burst, with substantial other damage but was soon brought under control.

Fire at Cleveland school claims seventy three lives
Seventy three persons are known to have died when a fire destroyed the Cleveland South Carolina school building. Of the identified dead forty one were in the crowded auditorium watching a commencement playlet when an oil lamp ignited the wooden structure. An explosion followed as victims crowded exits and were burned. Authorities searched the wreckage for more remains.
