Burglars attempted to break into A Olsen's tailoring shop in Hartley block last night. They damaged a door panel and fled without completing the job. Victor Johnson, injured previously, now faces possible lockjaw after a leg amputation at the Sanitarium. Frank Simmons marries at Swan River, aided by Rev. Dr. Hawley. A L Shonfield plans Minneapolis move after ten months in Brainerd. Andy Bennett and Tom Sanborn form a grocery partnership at Sixth and Laurel, opening next week. Rents drop in several cities. Brainerd also sees lower charges as property owners seek revenue.
Creditors shut the Nelson & Press cigar manufactory early this week after the Press partner fled with about 500 in cash to settle debts in St Paul. No trace of the culprit has been found, and local papers are attacking Brainerd youths who visited skating events, with little cause evident.

On Thursday afternoon Fred Paine aged 13 son of Wm Paine was thrown from a wagon on Fifth Street. He suffered a severe compound fracture of the right leg when his horse team jolted over a hay rack and headed toward a fence. He leaped to safety but went under the wagon. Dr. Rosser attended and is reported to be doing as well as could be expected.
At a Monday night school meeting Prof. J. A. Wilson of Lexington Ohio was elected principal of Brainerd high schools. New teachers include Miss Lizzie Hawley Miss Dobner of Lake City and Miss Lorane Yonker of Corry Penn. Retained are Miss Louise Smith Miss Minnie Merritt Miss Inez Pember and Miss Jennie Partridge. School starts September 1.
C K Hendrickson an agent for several steamship lines, based at 114 South Washington avenue Minneapolis, has disappeared just before agents of the lines he represented appeared. He left his wife and two children, and numerous small creditors including fellow countrymen seek him. He resided in Segelbaum house Oak Lake and owned Brainerd lots and Dakota land with some payments made.
Messrs Julus Schutt of Davenport Iowa C F Kindred of Brainerd Minnesota and several New Yorkers secure a seven million acre grant in Venezuela for timber sugar and grazing land. The pact promises a monopoly on asphalt coffee sugar and rubber exports with duty free trade under the syndicate. Cuban investors back a 40000 acre sugar lands sale for 560000 plus 6 per acre for ninety nine years to aid the covenants.
I A White finished assessing real and personal property and the city board of equalization met to hear complaints and review the roll. Several firms were raised from 800 to 2000 and one to 612000, more than owners' valuations. Real estate listed at 1427000 and personal property at 386000. County Board of Equalization to sit for one week starting Monday for taxpayers to seek redress.

Col C B Sleeper and Lt Gov Barto of Sauk Center were walking toward the Villard Hotel when a spent 32 caliber bullet struck the Governor in the neck. He pulled the slug from his shirt collar and noted the shot came from East Brainerd. The incident prompted reflections on Brainerd’s reputation and a long military guard.
During marriage festivities at Mr Jones's two married women dressed in male attire roamed the premises seeking fun. The younger guests pursued the pair as they fled, one woman’s loud yell leaving Mr Jones certain she will not wear male attire to a ceremony again.
Duluth News reports Alderman Fink was acquitted the second time on the charge of selling liquor on Sunday. Around 200 men are building the Omaha road from its junction with the Northern Pacific near the Nemadji river to South Duluth. A stock company may buy or lease the Vineyard rink for militia use. Attachments disrupt furniture at Duluth Variety Theatre. Ehrenhardt & Swanson lease the theatre and J. J. Riley will manage it to ensure a successful show.
The family D. W. and Racward Waitrorp gratefully thanks neighbors friends Grand Army Post and the Broom Brigade for services rendered during Florence’s sickness and death. They note with comfort the belief that she is not dead but sleeping.

Frank L. Crocker of Minneapolis and W. E. Leland of Brainerd lease a corner lot at First avenue south and Sixth street to build a brick roller rink 196 by 100 feet with a 175 by 80 foot skating floor. The venue will seat 2900, host 500 pairs Crocker skates and 100 pairs nickel plate skates, include a bicycle track, two galleries, and be steam heated and well ventilated. Opening target is September 15, or by October latest, with Crocker touring to study top rinks for best features. The project aims to attract large patronage and provide a profitable investment akin to Detroit’s rink profits.

At Red Wing on a Monday morning John T Hastings spotted two men robbing his gun shop. He fired through the window wounding both in the head, they surrendered as Hastings summoned police. Charles Baldin aided, trapping the pair at the front. they were strangers. Both suffered severe head injuries and had knives in their hands.
