Brainerd Hook and Ladder Co No 1 challenges Brainerd Hose Co No 2 to a July 19 1884 baseball game at 3 30 oclock P M for $10 a side. Only members of each company may play. Deposit to B F Hartley on acceptance. Braiserod Hoox and Lapper Co No 1 secretary C D Johnson.
The stockholders of the Masonic Temple and Opera House Association are notified a meeting will be held at the office of C. B. Sleeper, President, Monday July 14, 1884 at 3 p.m. sharp to vote an increase of stock from 14 000 to 17 000. All stock owners are requested to be present. J. L. Sura, Brainerd, July 9, 1884. Sec'y.
Pap Thomas Post G A R plans an old fashioned Camp Fire and Bean bake likely Friday evening before leaving for Minneapolis. The event at the roller rink will feature a program similar to last winter, followed by supper and a social dance. Admission is 50 cents for supper and dance to fill the room.
A Disparen reporter visited Conkling Clark & Co on Front Street this afternoon. The Hardware Store displayed a large, brand new, up to date stock in a neat attractive setting. A tin shop with first class workmen operates alongside the firm.
At the Brainerd Baptist Church on June 27 the WCTU elected officers led by President Mrs. Paquin and Treasurer Mrs. White. Cor Secy was Mrs. Rhodes and Recording Secy Mrs. Ingersoll. Vice Presidents invited to July Congregational Church meeting.
Miller and Grant invite residents to a blueberry picnic at Gilbert Lake on Thursday July 17 at the old grounds north of the lake. The nearby woods are full of blueberries and refreshments will be provided. Boat rental is halved for this day and a sail boat will be available to the party.
Police conducted a Thursday morning raid on houses of ill repute. Eleven women and two men were jailed and brought before Judge Douglas. Several pleaded guilty or were fined, including a landlady with a higher fine. One cook was dismissed without a fine after explaining her family situation.
The Herald reports six passenger conductors fired by the Northern Pacific last week. L. N. Low of Brainerd registered at the Windsor in Duluth. Stewart of the Vineyard rink plans a new skating venue on Superior street but enlargement efforts were shelved after Parlor Rink owner Armstrong leased adjacent land. Armstrong leads Duluth in roller skating costumes with blue flannel suits trimmed in gilt cord. others follow.
A. E. Losey and C. E. Saab announce the dissolution of the firm by mutual consent with C. E. Smith retiring. Losey will operate at the Blue Front on Seventh Street handling debts, accounts, and undertaker duties. Smith's sale of interest transfers to Losey, with the Blue Front continuing undertakings, upholstery, and framing.
The week saw burglaries at Engineer Green on Tenth street North Wednesday afternoon while residents were away, at G G Hartley’s on Tuesday night with valuables including a gold watch chain and diamonds, and a Thursday 4 am break in at Mrs. Gleason’s 143 South 6th Street. The thief entered by the back door, searched rooms, and seized a gold watch and chain, a pocket book with about fifteen to sixteen dollars, and a perfumery case among other items, then fled toward J J Howe & Co’s saw mill. Households reported locked doors manipulated to ease exit, with police and city officials handling subsequent notices, bills, and meetings in Brainerd.
