The New York Journal reports two painters studios at 106 and 108 East Twenty third Street were destroyed by fire. Thomas R. Congdon saved his wife portrait, burned his hair and hands, but the portrait survived. Congdon and his wife had returned from Holland and he vows to persevere amid loss of Velasquez copies and Hals studies.

Early Tuesday morning, about $30 in cash was stolen from the till at Geo Gardner's saloon. Suspect James Walker, the cleaner, is believed responsible as the bartender slept and woke to find Walker gone with the money. Chief Nelson dispatched notices with Walker's description, but he remains at large.
