McCulloch County beef cattle producers are invited to attend a short course next Wednesday October 5 to discuss important factors in their industry. Sponsored by the County Extension Livestock Committee, the course will be given at the elec.
A UT Press publication showcases Buck Schiwetz’s Texas sketches and watercolors, including a McCulloch County courthouse drawing. The text notes Schiwetz, a Houston ad executive, is famed for Humble Oil covers and the new book includes notes and a winter scene from Brady.
The seventh annual membership meeting of the Central Texas Telephone Co op will be held Monday in Goldthwaite at the new American Legion Hall south of town on US Highway 183. Registration starts at 1 pm with the business session set for 2 pm. Goldthwaite merchants are offering attendance prizes.
The First Baptist Church will begin the new year with morning and evening services. Rev. J. J. Jordan reports a 300 Sunday School goal and 65 Training Union goal. The 11 o'clock service includes a note burning ceremony marking debt payment and a sermon titled, God Speaks to His Church. An evening candlelight service will install workers for the year, followed by the Lord’s Supper.
The McCulloch County Live stock Association hosts a barbecue for members and prospective members Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory. San Saba Brady Soil Conservation District votes for Zone 2 supervisor while officers are nominated and elected. The 104‑member group invites new joiners, with Hubert Moseley as president Billy Jones as vice president and E L Ross as secretary.
Farm Bureau will meet at 8 p m Saturday at the electric co op building. The membership committee led by Harry Hanson will convene before the directors at 7 30 p m.
Brady hosts Stamford in a marquee clash ranked in The Dallas Morning News top ten. Coach Owens notes Brady must slow two backs Bates and Gerloff while adapting to new quarterback Charley Terrell. Stamford seeks bounce after a 14-12 loss ending a 30 game win streak. key starters listed on offense include Moritz Terrell and Bates as the teams prepare for a statewide audience.
McCulloch County re-elected its three man ASC Committee to oversee farm programs. The panel includes Ben Hodges of Waldrip as chairman, Earl Dahlberg of Melvin, and Dana B. Henderson of Mercury. Delegates to the convention named John W. Brown, Edward Lyckman, and Orville Beakley as county leaders. First alternate Leon Barton and second alternate Arnold Benson were chosen, with new terms starting October 1.
After more than 30 years in Brady, Cecil Verner and his wife relocate to Abilene. Verner closed Verner's Jewelry, which he ran in Brady since 1920, thanking Brady residents for their friendship and patronage as they depart.
The Wonderland Exposition Company brings a carnival to the County Exhibit at Curtis Field for October 7 and 8. Carnival set up Wednesday with daily free acts including an elephant. Booth space remains for additional exhibitors as organizers seek more commercial displays.
Zone 2 supervisors will be elected in mass meetings next Tuesday across San Saba Brady and the Concho Soil Conservation Districts. Voters must be 21 plus landowners in the district counties. The San Saba Brady meeting is at 7 30 p m in Brady National Guard Armory with McCulloch County Livestock Association, while the Concho district meet is at 3 p m in Lohn tabernacle. James Finlay Sr of Fife retires after nearly 20 years on the Concho board. George Johanson leads the San Saba Brady Zone 2. Clifford Powell notes flood prevention plans for Salt Creek. Lohn meeting at 1 30 p m Tuesday to discuss.
Brady Junior High schedules seventh and eighth graders for matchups at San Saba on Tuesday Oct 4 at 6 pm. Brady B team will face Ballinger B team in Brady on Thursday Oct 6 at 7 30 pm.
A 7:30 p.m. potluck at Voca Community House invites all to bring a covered dish and eat for 1 dollar with children under 12 eating free. Buck Brown's String Band from Fly Gap will play and bingo offers five bushels of pears as prizes. Proceeds fund a new roof for the Community House.
The Brady Lions Club plans a light bulb sale on Thursday Oct 6 with 504 sacks packed at Kimbell Brady Co. Each sack holds one 60 watt one 40 watt and two 100 watt bulbs. Sells for one dollar per sack as the club stages neighborhood sales under President Andy Allen.
T Wood a vocational agriculture teacher at Melvin maintains a two crop yearly garden. This year peas tomatoes and other crops are thriving despite bean trouble. Mrs Wood serves fresh beans peas okra tomatoes cantaloupe and watermelon for noon meals. The peas should fare well until frost with recent rains.
