Jaycees host the Second Annual World's Goat B B Q Cook-off at Richards Park drawing attendees from across the region. The Brady event gains national notice with reports from Frank X Tolbert and echoes Terlingua and Luckenbach chili fame.
Brady Bulldogs visit Ballinger to renew a long running high school football series. Kickoff is 8 p m with Brady hoping to end a three game skid against Ballinger in a game featuring strong Bearcat backs Joe McQueen Mike Rodriguez and Ellis Snell and Brady’s Billy Ragsdale at quarterback.
A Saturday street party and dance on the east side of Brady’s square starts the American Bicentennial and McCulloch County Centennial observances. The event invites all ages with a $1 admission, free for those under 12 and over 65, and features a Sidewalk Sale as Brady merchants wear old-fashioned attire and offer old-fashioned prices.
Don Morgan was elected first vice president of the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night to replace the resignation of Dr Richard Lane. Mrs Bill Moffatt was chosen as welcome representative for newcomers and Brady merchants. A Sept 20 hamburger supper at Richards Park, catered by the Brady Jaycees, was set for 7 p m. The chamber’s Bicentennial project focuses on cleaning Brady Creek and promoting daily flag flying. Ty Simpson spoke after attending a Farm Bureau Citizenship Seminar in Waco about his learnings. A street party and dance begins at 7 p m with Buck Knox and musicians. The east side square will be blocked for traffic. Kenneth Threadgill, famed Austin country music figure, will headline with Velvet Cowpasture Janey Hart Jimmy Young Frank Torres and others. Threadgill, praised by Darrell Royal, has appeared nationally and is noted in the Congressional Record as a Central Texas singing legend. Janis Joplin once started with Threadgill. Food and concessions open at 7 p m with a flag-lowering at sundown. The event invites families to join in an old-fashioned Heart of Texas gathering.
Dr James G Bodenhamer of Mason was found dead on a ranch southeast of Mason after being missing since August 28. An autopsy was underway with funeral services held at First United Methodist Church Mason and burial in Gooch Cemetery. Survivors include his wife and nine grandchildren.
Racing returns for a two day Jubilee Association Fall Meet at G Rollie White Downs with about 70 horses entered and 600 stall reservations. Eleven Saturday races and twelve Sunday races showcase quarter horses and thoroughbreds, with new track features improving facilities and a high note for the association’s best financial year.
Brady merchants will hold an old fashioned sidewalk sale this Saturday with bargains at old fashioned prices. Thirteen merchants including Ben Franklin Store Buy Rite Shoe Store Glamour House Boutique Lintz's Gift Gallery J C Penney City Drug Modern Day Miller's Samuel's Huffman's Thelma's Perry Bros participate. An old fashioned Bicentennial theme will see some staff in period costumes. A Street Party and Dance on the east side of the square invites shoppers to begin early and stay late.
