Record grain harvest boosts McCulloch County output in 1975

In 1975 McCulloch County reports a bumper maize crop near 75 to 80 percent complete with over 20 million pounds bought by three agents. Co op leaders say the year rivals the 1949 bumper harvest, with 13 million pounds shipped mainly to Corpus Christi for export and sales to California and Mason Feeders. Wheat purchases reach 14 million pounds, oats weaker at about three million pounds, and much grain remains stored in barns.

Horse Racing Returns Here at Jubilee Meet in Brady

The Jubilee Association hosts a Fall Race Meet at G Rollie White Downs September 6 7. Saturday features quarterhorses with AQHA recognition and Sunday offers quarterhorses and thoroughbreds. Races total about 21 with distances from 250 yards to three fourths mile. 70 horses are stabled now with more expected after Labor Day.

Noni Johnson Named Advertising Director at The Standard

Noni Johnson, veteran newspaperwoman from East Texas, becomes advertising director of The Standard and Herald. Former editor of the Cedar Creek Pilot and editor and publisher of the Lake Trails Weekly in Henderson County, she says she loves people and sports.

Second Annual World's Championship Barbecue Goat Cookoff

Enthusiasm grows for Brady event at Richards Park with 64 entries signed as of Wednesday. Defending champion Herb Stoecker and runners-up from Abilene Brownwood and Eldorado return. Prizes total 100 for first, 75 for second, 50 for third, 25 for fourth with a showmanship trophy. Events include pie judging, various contests, goat cooking, and a 6:30 pm barbecue goat supper.

Houston BMW Rally Brings 300 Enthusiasts to Brady Lake

The BMW Club of Houston plans a two day rally at Brady Lake with 300 riders expected. Registration at 9 a.m. Saturday includes a watermelon eating contest at 1 30 p m and a poker run at 4 p m. Sunday features a pancake breakfast 7 30 to 8 30 a m field events at 1 p m and awards at 5 p m. Residents from Mexico City are among expected visitors.

Brady Pilot Reaches 80 Amid Local Bicentennial Hopes

W. J. Bill White, a McCulloch County rancher, quietly marked his 80th birthday on Thursday. The Standard notes growing Bicentennial and Centennial interest in the county as it extends birthday congratulations.

College courses begin next week in Brady

Two of four Central Texas College courses at Killeen will start next week with English Real Estate Business Math and Accounting. Accounting by James Griffin meets Tue Thu starting Sept 2, Business Math by Ken Bull on Wed starting Sept 4, English with Dr Clarence Wolfshohl and Real Estate under Jack Browning begin Sept 8. Classes may meet in the high school library with location fixed by Friday. Contact the Chamber of Commerce or the CTC Records Office in Killeen for registration and details.
