Local school board members and administrators from over 700 districts unanimously endorsed Amendment No. 1 to end one percent withdrawals from the permanent school fund. Since 1957 five withdrawals totaling over 20 million have reduced the fund. Approval would guarantee a permanent fund and limit spending to investment earnings for current operations, ensuring pay as you go funding for education.
A McCulloch County Democratic committee led by Mrs. Houston Braly arranges rides to the polls and distributes sample ballots. Republican and Democratic officials note voters may pick any party, with transportation offered by both parties. GOP calls attention to a Nixon speech and Texas races as voters prepare for the November 3 election.
George Garrett, a highway patrolman stationed in Brady since 1960, is transferred to Bryan effective November 1. He and his wife with three sons will relocate to 909 N Park in Bryan and begin work there Sunday. Straley remains as Brady’s sole highway patrolman.
Brady Jaycees hosted a steak dinner at the National Guard Armory on October 22 honoring new and prospective members. A Park Committee chaired by Jon Ed Weaver held a regular meeting and appointed committees. Guest speaker Swede Johnson, local game warden, discussed deer hunting in McCulloch County followed by the film Tale of the Whitetail.
Arthur Buckner Bailey 68 and his wife Frances 51 were killed in a two car collision west of Albuquerque New Mexico early Wednesday. The driver of the other car also died. Bailey former head baseball and football coach at Washington State University for 35 years and later a Dodger scout, was famed in Brady for his colorful on field presence and rivalries with umpires. He grew up in San Saha and played college ball at Texas A M Bethany and Abilene Christian before moving to WSU in 1920s. He and his wife were traveling from Orona to visit relatives in New Mexico and Arizona on their way home to Washington. Funeral plans were not yet announced.
The North Ward PTA hosts a Halloween Carnival Saturday night starting at 6 oclock with games, a new Spook House, cake walk, dart game, fishing pond, fortune telling booth and refreshments. Proceeds benefit a local project of the North Ward PTA.
Police Chief Dorman Gibbs urges careful Trick or Treating in Halloween on Saturday night. He asks parents to explain street safety to children and motorists to watch for pedestrians. Gibbs praises teen conduct, pledges extra police and patrol cars to prevent accidents and property damage.
Young people from First Christian Church and affiliated congregations plan a Trick or Treat canvass to support the CROP program. They will visit homes starting at 3 p.m. wearing armbands and collecting donations to fund rice for a year for one child and other aid through Church World Service.
Mrs Richard Moseley of Rochelle McCulloch County attended a reception for Mrs Lyndon Johnson at San Angelo College in San Angelo Monday. She was joined by Mrs J G Lindsey of Maron and others including Mrs A C Stewart of Brady and Mrs Terry Townsend Hilly Underwood H Braly and L B Smith.
Meenuttoch Counter Livestock Association secretary treasurer Clair Whitesell says the predator control effort moves quickly with trappers contacting all signers. Good results noted as a coyote and a bobcat are captured in the drive.
Friday night games listed with Brady at Llano Prady at Llano, Melvin at Lometa, Early at Rochelle, Lohn row. Open date noted, memberships for a program still being taken at Brady and Melvin banks. New members signed include W. D. Jeffries and several others.
County Clerk Ira Turner reports 133 absentee ballots cast by Wednesday afternoon for the general election on November 8. The turnout marks one of the largest absentee contingents remembered, reflecting strong interest in this year’s race.
