A town hosts its annual Community Chest drive after pressures push leaders to begin the effort. Repeated shortfalls spark blame over taxes business conditions and trust issues as volunteers rally to reach the goal. Some residents question allocating funds to groups like Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts while goals remain unmet.
Town voices reveal frustration with fund drives and aid groups from scouts to disaster relief. Citizens debate USO funds, heart and muscular dystrophy care, mental illness, Red Cross credibility, and Gulf Coast hurricane aid while considering care for the elderly.
Lampasas Badgers travel to face Brady in a 17-AA clash shaping up as a potential upset rematch after Brady edged Lampasas 12-6 in 1958. Coach Chuck York notes Lampasas as stronger than Gatesville and promises a spirited, closer contest as Brady and Lampasas seek a tougher night on the road.
The annual county fair achievement exhibit fills about 40 booths at the National Guard Armory on Saturday November 7 open 9 am to 7 pm. Brady FFA and home demonstration clubs organize with exhibits from nine manufacturers and local merchants. Free coffee cake ice cream and other treats will be served. an inner spring mattress door prize is to be awarded.
Brady remains sixth after a 42 to 0 victory over Gatesville, according to the Dallas Morning News sports writers poll. Class AA rankings list Stamford top, with Floydada Bowie Elton Dimmitt ahead of Brady and a tie for tenth among Freer Olney Meyers Kaufman Cisco.
Rochelle 4 H Club boys Bob Bratton and Lewis Bratton showed Hereford steers at the State Fair in Dallas. Both steers earned choice grading with Ob's in the 901 to 1000 pound class and Lewis' in the 800 to 900 pound range.
Twin daughters Atharine Elisa and Elisabeth Ay Hughes born to First St and Mrs Larry Hughes at Offutt Air Force Base Omaha. Weighs five pounds ten ounces and four pounds tee ounces. They reside at 2928 S 50th St Omaha. Paternal grandmother is Mrs Elisabeth Hughes of Brady and Mrs W H Ballou is paternal grandmother.
Brady High golfers edged Gatesville 302 to 325 Friday. Brady scorers included Bob Archer 74, Fred Lawrence 72, Charles Newlin 77, Gerald Lemons 79. Gatesville’s Joe Jones 72, John Jones 74, Charles Shepherd 88, tie scores 91 for Bill Nesbitt and Steve Beard. Additional Brady players were Jim George 80, Ed Carrithers 85, with nine holes Martin Broad 46, David Barker 47, Bill Geeslin 50.
The Last of three after game fellowships will be held next Friday night October 30 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church. Every young person of Brady is invited to attend for fun food and fellowship under the direction of youth director Leland Hayes. There will also be a fellowship after church Sunday night.
Max Cox a 1959 Brady High graduate receives a $1000 academic athletic scholarship from Baylor University based on his grades and entrance exam scores. Cox an all state Brady center last year now plays guard for Baylor freshmen and is the son of Mr and Mrs Else Wright Brady.
James N. Walton owner of Brady Automotive Supply was elected to a two year term as director from District 16 of the Automotive Wholesalers of Texas at the 26th annual convention in Dallas. A. W. O. T. includes 589 auto parts firms and members attended the event with 610 registrants and guests.
The Community Chest total stands at 6309.50 dollars, less than half of the 13877 goal. Campaign Chairman Roy T. Holliday notes Coleman County has raised 13248 toward a 17650 target while rural areas lag. An employee drive called Bucks of the Month starts this week.
Hardin Jones vice president of Brady National Bank spoke to Brady High School students on Banking in the Free Enterprise Economy outlining the U S banking system and job opportunities in small communities versus large city banks. He later met with seniors to discuss banking as a career as part of a Chamber of Commerce free enterprise series. Jack Smithwick of Intercontinental Manufacturing is slated for January.
A Brady FFA meeting named a committee to nominate three girls from each class as FFA chapter sweetheart. Members listed are John Latham Jerry Bratton David Lewallen Don Hall and Chipper Lankford. David Lewallen appointed secretary. Lyndon Myrick won a wallet door prize.
The employes section of the Community Chest drive was launched Monday. Mrs. Joe McDonough and Mrs. Fred Hall, ex chairmen of the section, have named it Bucks of the month. They urge each employe to pledge one hour's pay per month to the Chest as workers in Bucks of the Month pound the streets offering contributions.
August T. Anderson 77 a pioneer West Sweden farmer died Wednesday in Brady Hospital. Born Feb 23 1882 in Williamson County he farmed 53 years at West Sweden then moved to Brady last May for health. He married Elizabeth Teich Dec 23 1908. Funeral 2 p m Friday Wilkerson Chapel burial West Sweden Cemetery. Survivors wife a sister Annie Bramberg of Austin and nieces and nephews. A son died in 1920.
The Chamber of Commerce reports only 154 women replied to a labor survey. Manager Roger Wheeler says the response is insufficient and three times that many are needed for current industry negotiations. About 53 percent are aged 18 to 40, 22 percent are 41 to 50, and 26 percent are over 50.
