John Rudder, mayor of Brady Texas proclaims Tuesday October 9 as National Fire Prevention Week to promote fire safety awareness among four million elementary students nationwide.
Brady volunteers will stage an oil pit fire demonstration next Tuesday night as National Fire Prevention Week runs October 7 to 13. Fire Chief Joe McAnally and guest speaker John D. Rider will address audiences at Brady Junior High, Brady High, the Rotary Club luncheon, and Rochelle High School. Rider’s visit is arranged by Waldrop Insurance Agency with cooperation from the Brady Fire Department and local schools. The event explains using water to extinguish gasoline fires and warns against splashing water on grease fires.
Dr. J. S. King elected as director of Brady National Bank replacing Dr. B. A. Hallam Jr. Hallam attends school in New Orleans. King has lived in Brady since March 1947 and earned a veterinary medicine degree from Texas A&M. He works with Dr. Richard Winters at Brady Veterinary Hospital. King and his wife Fay Stone have two children.
The Brady High PTA hosts its annual Back to School meeting next Tuesday. Parents will visit each class with schedules while teachers outline subjects and aims for the year. The event starts at 7 30 p m and is one of three general PTA meetings this year.
Gainer's Store in Rochelle was burglarized Monday night. Items taken include watches lighters shoes blue jeans and other clothing. Police hold one suspect in Luling and three in Palacios. suspects linked to crimes in Fredericksburg and Junction.
The Brady 4-H Boys Club will meet Saturday at 10 in the County Agent Norman Drake office for an organizational meeting. Boys aged 9 to 21 who attend Brady schools and want 4-H membership are invited, as are parents of current and prospective members.
The McCulloch County Ministerial Alliance calls a meeting of youth representatives sponsors and ministers from cooperating churches at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Monday Oct 8 at 7 30 p m to discuss plans for the Halloween CROP collection. For each dollar raised 30 pounds of surplus food will be sent overseas and Rev Pill Douglas is the county chairman this year.
Joe Wilson, 75, formerly of McCulloch County, died in Whitney on Tuesday September 30 and was buried there Thursday. Attending the funeral were K W Huffman and wife, H J Huffman, Joe Ranne, Bill Lankford, H C Urban, and Bill Huffman.
The State Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin upheld a six year prison term for R. R. Sheffield of Brady. He was convicted in 1954 of passing a forged document to the Veterans Land Board. His lawyers argued the trial evidence was insufficient to support the conviction.
Scott Appleton, 20, UT junior tackle from Brady, stars for the Longhorns in 1962 after a standout sophomore year and key performances against Oregon and Texas Tech. Known for quiet bearing off the field, he commands the line at 225 pounds and has been moved to guard in Royal’s middle defense.
The MYF group of the First Methodist Church plans its annual Fall Round-up for Saturday evening October 6 from 7 30 to 10 30 in the church Fellowship Hall. Junior and senior high youth from 7th through 12th grades are invited.
Estelle Levy underwent a major operation at the Medical and Surgical Hospital on Monday and was reported to be doing nicely on Thursday. Her room number is 215.
The Brady City Council refuses to raise local phone rates by 50 cents and declines extended area service plans. Southwestern States Telephone Company officials say they may return with a fair value based request, noting losses under present rates.
City Council approved a new ordinance prohibiting gasoline deliveries to local service stations in large trucks. The measure targets two axle limit trucks and requires city license fees, safety stickers, insurance, and inspection. penalties run 100 to 200 dollars.
Richard Moseley of Rochelle fell at his ranch home Saturday crushing a vertebra. He is in Brady Hospital. expected to be released soon with a back brace. Sonior Daniels and Mr and Mrs Bill Hargrove welcomed a first grandchild born at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. the baby is a seven pound 14 ounce boy to Mr and Mrs Sandy Daniel of Garland. Mrs Daniel is Sandra Hargrove. Paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Joe D Daniel of Garland.
Brady high school football hosts Belton in a Friday game as coach K Y Owens reshuffles the lineup. Key seniors and backs are listed, with Belton remembered for a 1959 Brady win and recent tougher showings.

Twelve rural communities have finished their United Fund campaigns with all meeting or exceeding quotas. Co chairs George Purcell and Norman Drake noted strong results, while Lohn, Melvin, Rochelle, Calf Creek and others remain in progress and expected to double last year’s rural contributions.
Friday night schedule lists Belton at Prady Eden at Melvin Sohn at Carbon Rochelle, with no date provided. The open date leaves tonight’s games unclear and teams may adjust venues.
The entire east stands in Bull dog Stadium will be turned over to Belton fans for the football game Friday night. The Brady Band and students move to the north end of the west grandstands in Section E. Principal C A Ethridge said there will be plenty of seats for Brady fans in the west stands. We have 550 general admission seats in the south end alone.
