Legislature Battles Over Texas Tax Bill And Gasoline Levy
The Texas Legislature fought a close tax battle with pay for lawmakers at 25 per day halted May 10. The House taxes gasoline, cigarettes, tobacco, natural gas, and more, while the Senate adds auto storage, parking, jewelry, fur, real estate, airlines, hotels, and department stores to the bill. Senate hearings move quickly as State Highway Chairman Thorn ton urges gasoline at six cents rather than four. Governor Shivers backs a two cent rise to fund highways and seeks no income or sales tax. The outcome hinges on whether the tax bill will pass and adjourn within two weeks.
