Chamber of Commerce elects Walter Gray president

Walter Gray Brady grocer was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting Tuesday afternoon, succeeding T. F. Ereckson. New 1955 56 officers include C. A. Reynolds first vice president R. W. Jordan second vice president and Jim Harkrider treasurer. The board will meet June 6 to set the year program and select committees.

First Women Called For Jury Duty Here

Fifteen women among 40 prospective jurors are summoned for 35th District Court next Monday. They are the first women called since Texans approved jury service for women last fall. Twelve jurors will hear a civil suit over damages from a Brady auto wreck dated June 29, 1951. Irene J. Bjornson of Wahpeton North Dakota sues Dallas Miller of Brady. Miller has filed a cross action.

A B Awalt Named Frankston Man of the Year

A B Awalt superintendent of schools at Frankston Anderson County is named Frankston Lions Club Man of the Year for his work improving the public school system and active church and youth contributions. He is a Brady native, ex high school principal and longtime educator.

County Approves Auditor's Report and Budget

The County Commissioners Court approved the McCulloch County budget for this year and accepted the auditor's report. The report noted the county is in a little better financial condition than a year ago as stated by County Judge Love Kimbrough.

Honorary Degree To Be Conferred On Brady Pastor

Howard Payne College plans May 27 spring commencement with Rev. W LeRay Fowler of Brady First Baptist to receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity. Fellow honorees include Judge Few Brewster Texas Supreme Court Guy Newman president elect of Howard Payne Rev James Morgan of Fort Worth and Rev C W McCullough now Jamaica missionary. Fowler a Baylor and Southwestern Seminary graduate has 625 church additions including 250 baptisms since 1959 and helped build a new educational building in 1953. He serves on the Texas Baptists executive board and was named District 16 vice president this year. In early 1955 he joined a Jamaica evangelistic crusade.

Four Inch Rainfall Causes River Rise in Brady Creek Area

Two day total 2.31 inches in Brady County with Bear Creek drainage seeing the heaviest rainfall. Flooding prompted civil defense action as Brady Creek rose near Richards Park and detention dam water spilled from Bear Creek. Local crews monitored flows and prepared to move park equipment if needed.

Clerk at Gilbreath's Wins Courtesy Award

C B Groves of Gilbreath's Food Market was named Brady's most courteous sales person for April by a secret shopper committee. He and employer Hubert Gilbreath will receive certificates at a Business and Professional Women's Club dinner at Roman's El Patio. Groves, active in church and civic affairs, lives with wife and three children at 1507 South High Street. Gilbreath, in Brady since 1934, has operated a grocery business for 10 years and now runs the store at 212-16 East Commerce Street. He and his wife live at 602 West 12th Street and have a daughter Georgan at Abilene Christian College.

Brower to Speak At Baccalaureate For BHS Seniors

The Rev. Thomas Brower of Brady Presbyterian Church will address Brady High School seniors at 8 p m Sunday in the high school auditorium. Rev. Travis McNair will give the invocation and Rev. H A Seitters will deliver the benediction. Performers include Mary Glyn Kittle Sherron Smith Cynthia Reynolds and a vocal trio with accompaniment. Commencement is Friday May 20 with the class leaving May 21 for Galveston.

Scouts Bake Sale to Fund Camp Trip

Boy Scout Troop 24 plans a bake sale on the square Saturday to raise funds for Camp Sol Mayer near Menard later this month. Proceeds go to the troop fund to loan members twelve dollars and fifty cents for the week's stay, with repayment after the summer work. Scoutmasters Johnny Moran and Charlie Pence lead the troop.

Lohn Seniors to Receive Diplomas Friday Evening

Lohn High School seniors will receive their diplomas Friday night at 8 o'clock. Valedictorian Betty Low and salutatorian Howard Joyce will speak. County School Supt J E Herrington will be principal speaker, introduced by Ronnie Gassiot. James Finlay Jr. will present diplomas. Ann Fullagar to play processional and recessional. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday with Rev Tommy Brower as speaker.

Lohn Valley Protective Association to hold annual meeting

The Lohn Valley Protective Association will meet Sunday at 11 50 a m on the B A Cornill ranch four miles east of Lohn. Officers will be elected and other business will be transacted. Charlie Miller serves as president and James Finlay as secretary.

Parade Plans Encouraging for July Jubilee

Jim Harkrider, named parade committee chair, says plans for the Jubilee parade are encouraging after one meeting with another session set Friday at the Chamber of Commerce. The committee invites float entrants and lists members handling livestock FFA 4 H club boys, queen's float, bands, fire department, National Guard, military and other entries.
