The Brady Jubilee committee scales back the July 3 parade by abandoning the float due to high costs. James Wilkinson of Homer Duncum Tire Co. steps in as parade coordinator as organizers consider new float options, committee roles, and engaging local dignitaries bands and antique cars.
Two Brady groups, the Lions Club and Industrial Foundation, voiced concern over the Richards Park reservoir drying up. They agreed that water in the dry bed would beautify the park and called for a solution, joined by many residents. HERE FROM IRVING visiting Irving residents include Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Longley with their daughter and family, and Mrs. E. E. Buchanan.
Rochelle Schools Superintendent Kenneth Mitchell released the list naming valedictorian Kathy Turnell with a 94.6 average and salutatorian Suzie Johnson at 84.3. Graduation is May 28 at 8 p.m. in the school gym with Bill Spurgin delivering the address and Gary Engdahl giving the invocation.
E L Ross a veteran Brady High School vocational agriculture teacher in McCulloch County Texas won second place in the Vo Ag division and eighth in the senior division of Hoards Dairyman Magazine Cow Judging Contest He received two cash awards totaling 34 and two framed certificates The May 10 issue noted 111 687 entries and 1 431 vo ag instructors from 47 states Ross the only Texas winner and with 32 years in the field is a Texas A M graduate raised on a dairy farm
J. D. Bailey, secretary-treasurer of the Heart O' Texas Golf Association, said 100 entries are confirmed for the Memorial Day tournament at the Brady Golf Course. He urged local golfers to pay fees quickly as spots are expected to fill next week and encouraged non golfers to buy a $15 activity ticket for all social events.
Two groups met in Austin with the Texas Education Agency over a racial balance complaint tied to transfers from Melvin County Line ISD. County Supt. Emmit Herod and three county board members led one side, while residents seeking to transfer their children attended the other. TEA will seek a prompt decision from HEW, shaping each district board’s stance.
Postmaster T A Lankford announces that most postal rates rise Sunday May 16 under the Postal Reorganization Act as the new rate system begins. First class letters go 6 to 8 cents an ounce and air mail 10 to 11 cents. post cards 5 to 6 cents, air mail cards 8 to 9 cents. Second and third class increases follow with phased implementation over five to ten years pending funds. Canada and Mexico letter rates will also rise.
The Brady Bulldog band directed by James Mallow performs 13 pieces at 8 p m Friday in the Brady High School auditorium. Highlights include a new drum major, Holst First Suite in E flat, a Lola Flores Latin piece, A Balm In Gilead, Trombrere with three trombonists, a Johnny Mercer medley, Promises Promises medley, and a closing drum major presentation.
