Welfare costs may rise under new Medicaid changes
Texas lawmakers heard estimates that Medicaid amendments could require at least 25.9 million in additional state outlays for the coming biennium. Welfare officials warned Nixon administration plans might cost Texas an extra 2 million annually and raise the number of children on aid. If proposals pass, the state faces about 70 million in new program costs next fiscal period plus catch-up funds and possible 9 million yearly mental retardation related expenses. The permanent school fund remains strong with a 139 million expected from the Culberson County sulphur deposit and public land auctions adding 3.1 million.
