Upstream Dams Prove Worth During Rains
Flood prevention structures on the Middle Colorado River watershed operated last weekend sparing lower areas from flood damage to crops roads and fences. E J Hughes Brownwood area conservationist estimates about 6370 acre feet of flood water trapped behind 24 completed structures with release planned over eight to ten days through drawdown tiles. Rainfall ranged 2 to 6 inches across watersheds, runoff varied by cover and conservation treatment, moisture depths reached 12 to 16 inches on sparse cover and 6 to 60 inches on dense cover.
