Brady merchants closed shops from 2 to 3 p m Wednesday to observe the death of Earl Rudder 59 in Houston. Mayor Aubrey Davee ordered half mast flags and the final rites were held at G Rollie White Coliseum Texas A&M with eight students as pallbearers. Rudder had suffered a stroke and died of circulatory collapse with tributes from Gov. Smith Yarborough Teague and Frank Erwin.
The proclamation honors Earl Rudder former Brady mayor and prominent citizen who died March 23 1970 in Houston. It requests local businesses close March 25 1970 from two to three pm for his funeral and asks for flag half masting during the procession.
The Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital fundraising drive received its first major donation from Arthur Carlson. Campaign manager Harold Warren said the gift supports a designated hospital area, with memorial recognition for major contributors, as plans begin to shape the building project costing about 1.925 million dollars. Local funds aim for 962 thousand, with a 480 thousand campaign goal and a potential Hill Burton grant if local money is raised by May 15.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit the Fellowship Hall of the Fourth and Bridge Street Church of Christ on Tuesday March 31 from 11 a m to 5 p m. Local executive secretary Mrs. Howard Salter urges new and regular donors noting past cancellations and the need to rebuild supply.
Supt Carl James states the Lohn School District trustee election is scheduled April 4 at the high school. Incumbent Gene Bratton faces J W Daniel Jr for the single seat, with Owen Rudolph serving as election judge. The district will observe Easter holidays Thursday Friday and next Monday.
The Benito Galindo family saw their East Brady residence burn Monday night leaving three rooms afire. The eight children and their parents lost belongings and call for clothing bedding furniture food and funds. Windrow Company will collect donations for pickup. The family has relocated to a nearby corner house.
