Soil Conservation Service technicians warn March winds can blow bare fields into roadways and remove large amounts of oil-like soil. In Concho County a windstorm moved soil along a fence line. unprotected fields risk loss of fertility and organic matter, while cover crops and residues reduce erosion with oats showing protection.
The 22nd Brady Relays panel features Winters Blizzards defending champions and the Bulldogs in a tight duel for the title. Twenty three teams including Cisco Bangs Rotan Goldthwaite Anson and others are slated to compete with Fred Sallings returning as starter. Prelims start at noon with finals at 7 p.m. Admission is 50 cents adults 25 cents students.
The memory of oldtimers recalls Robert E Lee camping at Soldiers Waterhole near Brady on Onion Creek. He spent 19 months at Fort Cooper Shackelford County during his Texas service and rode from San Antonio to Fort Cooper in 1856 with two squadrons of the Second Cavalry.
Bobby Deeds of Rochelle FFA exhibited a registered Angus heifer that finished 14th in the open breeding heifers class at the Houston Stock Show. He bought the heifer from the Milt Miller herd in Brady, plans to keep it as a brood cow, and aims to enter another beef heifer next year. Deeds is the son of Mr and Mrs Bobby D Deeds and showed in Houston from February 24 through March.
A barbecue dinner at the National Guard Armory on Sunday noon to 2 pm is hosted by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Proceeds fund children’s books. tickets cost 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for children.
Final rites were held in Borger for Fred Foster 84 a retired farmer who lived in Borger 18 years He died Friday March 6 at 7 25 p m His wife died in 1954 Survivors include one daughter Mrs Margie Krause of Cooahoma eight sons Bill Clarence Cecil all of Borger Lloyd Shawnee Okla Jack Crowley Leonard Snyder and George Glenn and Hollis Des Moines Iowa 27 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren
Jennings H. Flathers field representative for the National Education Association will speak at a McCulloch County Teachers Association dinner next Tuesday. The event starts at 7 p m in the Brady High School cafeteria with Mrs. Patricia Robertson San Angelo teacher and district NEA representative also attending. Visiting teachers from Mason Menard and San Saba counties are expected.
The Rochelle Board of Education accepted the resignation of H. W. Duncan as principal to relocate near a special education facility for his daughter Debbie.
Laura Ellis longtime Brady teacher at South Ward ends her service this school year. She told the School Board in January not to consider her for re election according to Supt C A Reynolds on Tuesday.
Four Brady boys receive All-District 18 AA honors as Bubba Harris and Lloyd Beesley lead first team selections. Harold Anderson and Greg Chase join second team, with Marion Lewis and others earning honorable mention across Brady Mason Llano Coleman and Fredericksburg. Girls honors list Janie Dieterich Reba Dieterich Brenda Brooks and Barbara Havee with multiple honorable mentions.
The Heart of Texas Golf Association will hold an 18 hole tournament for local golfers Sunday starting at 1 p m Four man teams will be selected in a drawing according to handicaps Entry fees two dollars per man should be filed with John Lewis association secretary by 4 p m Saturday All local golfers are invited to participate.
Relays sweep track marks as Brady school dominates with multiple record performances. Gerald Wynn tops shot put and discus while Riley Dunn pushes sprint times for Coleman and Brady squads across events including mile and 440 relays.
Kenneth Moore won the president runoff with Jerry Atherton as Brady High School selects officers for the 1964 65 year. Dolan Hargrove won the vice presidency in a runoff with Bob Miller. Secretary position to be decided in a runoff between Janice Breckenridge and Janie Crew. Cheerleader candidates listed for next year's squad.
Brady High School double quintet sails to a 15 minute TV appearance in San Angelo on KCTV Tuesday 5 15 to 5 30 pm. The group led by Mrs Don Hale and accompanied by Cleve McDonough will perform after being invited following a district math teachers meeting chaired by Ed Whiteley.
Brady High School hosts the ninth annual Brady Invitation golf tournament featuring 24 teams divided into AAA AAAA and AA divisions. Top division tees at 8 30 a m lower division at 1 30 p m at Brady Municipal Course with favorites including Austin’s Austin Maroons San Antonio’s Jefferson defending champion and McCallum of Austin. Lower bracket contenders include A&M Consolidated Coleman Jacksboro Brady and Calvert making a debut coached by H S Pearson as tournament director C A Ethridge.
Mrs. Mattie Bra Smith 76 died at 6 p m Tuesday at her North Bridges Street home. She was mother of Mrs. Jack Wootan and had lived two years in Brady. Born June 5 1887 in Burnet she was wife of the late Daniel Bates Smith. Funeral at 2 20 p m Thursday Church of Christ in Eola with Wilkerson directing burial at Mereta Cemetery. Survivors include six sons and three daughters.
Singing The Fike oe Singing Convention will be held on March 15 at the London Baptist Church.
