The 18th Brady Relays will run Friday and Saturday April 3 and 4 with 40 plus schools entering. Preliminaries start Friday at 3 p m. finals Saturday 10 a m to 3 45 p m no night events. Stephen F Austin defends after 134 points. Odessa 122, San Angelo 59, Brownwood 48 32.
Colonel C. D. Slick Reed is named honorary colonel on Governor Raymond Garys staff with a signed document from the governor. Oklahoma legislator W. D. Bradley arranged the appointment noting Reed as a strong Texas supporter after a Texas victory. Reed accepted with irony declaring he has never set foot in Oklahoma.
Brady High FFA members chose their chapter sweetheart on Tuesday. Her name will be announced later at a high school assembly. The group also planned a trip to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb 14 and formed a committee for the father son banquet with Billy Ross Cavin as chairman and members Ed Carruthers Bill Archer and Jimmy Bratton.
Brady telephone exchange will link to the nationwide operator distance dialing system on Sunday February 1, expanding microwave radio links from Brady to Hall Brownwood Coleman Abilene and Sweetwater. The change allows direct dialing to about 8000 cities and faster long distance connections without operator assistance.
A standing room crowd at Melvin's American Legion Hall witnessed 14 Golden Gloves bouts to benefit the Match of Dimes. Notable moments included Bobby Barsch and Johnny Watson in Brady with Watson winning, and an injury halted Orville Wright versus Dee Ward with no decision.
Terry Townsend representative from the 74th District will be in Brady Saturday morning visiting home folks and meeting friends. He said he would be at the courthouse or around the square for those wishing to see him.
Friday night Brady Lions Club presents a benefit variety show and wedding at Brady High School auditorium to aid the March of Dimes. Miss Buford Sheffield marries Groom candidate Tuffy Moseley or Norman Archer with Linda Peters as star. admission $1 adults 50¢ children. Cast includes Groom and Bride, Ma, Pa, Maid and Matron of Honor, Best Man, Ring Bearer, Flower Girls, Jilted Lover, Candle Lighters, Singer, Ushers, and many Bridesmaids.
Mrs. Leona Ruth Dotson 21 of Brady died Tuesday when her 195 Chevrolet left U S 87 struck a culvert three miles south of Mason. Her eight month old baby survived uninjured. State highway worker Damon Whitaker found the wreck around 4 p.m. The infant was taken to Mason Memorial Hospital. The car accident is believed caused by distraction by the baby. Funeral services planned for Blanco with burial at Blanco Cemetery. Survivors include husband G S Dotson a son Jimmy an infant daughter Wanda Lee a sister Charlotte Brewer of Austin a brother Elbert Kroll and father Emil Kroll both of Johnson City and mother Leona Ackerman of Brady.
Linda Faye Peel of Melvin has been named 1959 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow after earning the highest score on a 50 minute written test on home making knowledge and attitudes given to Melvin senior girls.
Brady residents face a poll tax trap if a city lake bond is proposed this year. Only 1,120 poll taxes were paid by Thursday at Tax Assessor-Collector John Guice's office. The tax office will stay open Saturday afternoon to accommodate late payments, with the deadline approaching.
A new fire truck jointly purchased by the City of Brady and McCulloch County costs 9086.10 dollars and features a 600 gallon water tank. It can operate three water streams and can be connected to additional lines for continuous water supply. The Brady Fire Department will maintain it, with county usage for county fires as needed.
Rehearsal dinner for the O'Dimes Clubb nuptials unfolds at Barker's Pig Sticking Parlor with guests including Tuffy Moseley Buforda Sheffield O'Dimes and local tradesfolk. Lincoln County tone and tongue slip through the pages as plans for Friday's Brady High School ceremony emerge.
