Pieces By Larry B Smith recalls a 10 year past TV special featuring Ann Margret. The writer, a Navy sailor nicknamed Homer, recalls passing on an on deck performance to sleep in bunk and dream of home amenities during long watches. Page 9 continuation hinted.
Charley McAnally will serve Brady Grand Commandery No. 68 Knights Templar as commander for 1975. The order was chartered April 18 1918 with meetings the second Thursday each month. Officers include J M McLemore generalissimo Terry L Lane captain general Far N Hall senior warden G D Davenport junior warden M E Kidd prelate Clarence Snider treasurer W E Lohn Jra recorder John W Brown standard bearer W O Stewart sword bearer Ray J Smith warder and J Eugene Williams sentinel. The local lodge lists 112 members with 10 as life members.
J R Dick Harris 67, a Voca rancher and former state engineer, was found dead about 9 15 p m Saturday on the Callahan ranch near the San Saba McCulloch County line. San Saba Justice of the Peace Harvey Reeves ruled death from natural causes with investigations by local sheriffs and deputies. Harris had heart trouble and was found lying over a downed tree about a mile from his ranch home. Funeral services were held at 10 a m Tuesday in Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with graveside services at 4 p m in a San Marcos cemetery. He was a Texas A&M graduate and had lived in the Voca area for 30 years. Survivors include three nephews and two nieces.
The Brady High School Band fundraiser raised about 2460 dollars from 160 items including puppies orchids barbecued pig and beef. Proceeds fund refurbishing bass marching horns and a saxophone with Daymon McBee as top buyer.
Eva Virginia and A J Ricks opened Ricks Electric Appliance Co in Brady in January 1935 with a 13 by 20 foot shop on Bridge Street. Mrs Ricks handled books and sales while Mr Ricks managed sales service and delivery. A Model A coupe served as delivery and service vehicle. business quickly expanded from one radio and a few items to more stock and larger quarters as patronage grew. Continued on page 5.
James Finlay Jr chairman of the McCulloch County ASC committee urged Cay Wool producers to turn in 1974 Wool and Unshorn Lamb sales by Friday Jan 31 He advised keeping 1975 marketings records for future incentive payments and noted 1974 wool payments likely to be issued in April 1975.
Brady National Bank Commercial National Bank and Ranchland National Bank report deposits up about 2 million over one year and nearly 5 million since 1972. Loans rise with deposits as agriculture setbacks are offset by building, industry and home construction activity. Local bankers predict continued growth if agriculture recovers, noting retail and real estate activity supports Brady's economy amid inflation and loan-access challenges.
Strickland reports April race meet entries closed for Futurity Derby and Thoroughbred Futurity. 81 Quarter Horse futurity entrants with 75 100 100 payments due. 26 Derby entrants. 21 Thoroughbred Futurity entrants. Prizes projected over 25000 for futurity, 5000 for derby and 5000 for thoroughbred. Track work complete with new outside rail. season expected to feature the best Texas track.
Ida McCulloh 82 of Brady died at Sheffield Rest Home No 2 after a long illness. Funeral 11 am Tuesday at Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Lamar Leifeste officiating. Graveside service 4 pm at Hubbard Cemetery. She was born July 23 1892 in Hill County. Survivors include a daughter Mrs C A Thomas Brady two sons C M McCulloh Fort Worth and Dr Albert McCulloh Brady a brother N A Shirley Austin. Her husband Albert M McCulloh died in 1962. She lived much of her life in Penelope and in Brady the past four years. Pallbearers listed.
