Flu like illness keeps residents home and schools absentee. McCulloch County reports cases at Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital and Brady Doctors Clinic waiting room fills with flu symptoms. Eastern states reach epidemic stages as Hong Kong flu and other respiratory ailments spread nationwide.
The Rev J Lawrence Driskill and Mrs Driskill will head a Mission Weekend at Brady Presbyterian Church this Saturday and Sunday. A former missionary to Japan, he has worked in evangelism and education since 1949 and helped start churches near Osaka since 1964. They speak at 7 p.m. Saturday family night and 9 45 a.m. Sunday worship with sermon at 11 a.m. Sunday. The public is invited.
The McCulloch County courthouse, built in 1900, is in dire shape with leaks, outdated systems, and crowded spaces. Proposals from remodel to new construction range from 506 580 to 589 298 dollars, with a possible museum use for the old building if kept. County Judge Roger George urges an election and public input to decide whether to remodel or replace while noting finances remain strong and a bond option could be pursued.
The Brady Bulldog Band will perform its annual Winter Concert on Thursday January 27 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. The Brady City Council changed the policy on new developments requiring owners to pay for water and sewer installation without city reimbursement. The move affects only utilities and excludes electricity and paving. The council also discussed a proposed CVCOG data center, drainage improvements, Lake Brady work, insurance recoveries, hangar leasing, and a Mayoral election.
Tom Bradley Heads Brady VFW Post 5622 was instituted in Brady on January 13 with Mel Stanley of San Angelo presiding. District 22 is headquartered in San Angelo. Authorities from Odessa Ballinger Rowena and Winters assisted. Tom Bradley Jr named commander with a slate of officers. Membership open to U S veterans with overseas service earning a campaign ribbon and honorable discharge.
Brady Independent School District trustees extended Supt. C A Reynolds contract through 1974 75 and adopted a policy allowing school groups to use buses with prior approval and no conflict with regular routes. Reimbursement for extracurricular bus use will follow House Bill 1142 at 22 cents per mile for 71 72, plus actual costs thereafter. The board also discussed administrators conference tax decisions and a shift to a quarter based system starting 72 73 with full statewide adoption by 73 74.
Rochelle trustees extend superintendent Kenneth Mitchell’s contract one year to July 30 1974. Dee Cox hired to replace Elbert Doyal as bus driver and mechanic. Home Economics class prepared and served dinner for board members and families.
