In a reflective piece Bob Wilson laments the abandonment of the Texas Special between San Antonio and St Louis. He recalls the train as a symbol of Texas pride, the odd conductors, and the old days of rail travel when seats were scarce and journeys felt like home.
The Southwestern Bell Telephone Company announced a 1959 expansion in its West Texas Division totaling about 1.46 million dollars for Brady and 11 other exchanges. The plan includes cable and copper circuit upgrades, dial conversion for Mason Dripping Springs Llano, toll line rebuilds, long distance line purchases, carrier equipment, toll switch board additions, and extensive extensions for new business and improvements across Texas Arkansas Oklahoma and Louisiana.
A non-denominational advertising service to boost church activity starts next Tuesday Jan 6 in The Herald. Keister Advertising Service of Strasburg Va produces messages used in 960 papers coast to coast and beyond. Local sponsors include Western Auto and Brady National Bank among many others.
Brady cagers opened with losses to Junction 62-55 and Coleman 54-39. They won B team games at Junction 63-20 and 42-38. Pat DeBusk led Coleman with 26 points while Robert Ricks scored 14 for Brady in the Coleman game. The Bulldogs head to Lampasas tournament then face Ballinger, Coleman, and Big Lake in early January.
Newly elected county officials were to be sworn in at 10 o'clock Thursday morning in the office of County Judge Love Kimbrough. Ira L. Turner becomes county clerk and Glenn Smith takes the oath as precinct 4 commissioner, with Judge Kimbrough administering to the others including District Clerk Mrs. W. R. Johnson and County Treasurer Mrs. D. C. Thomas. The new commissioners court will meet in its first session on January 12, the second Monday of the month.
The Red Cross Blood Program chairs Mra Harry Priess and Mra B A Hallam Jr urge donors to give next Thursday at the First Christian Church. The Bloodmobile runs 10 am to 4 pm, with seventy pints needed but about 96 donors required due to fitness rejections amid post holiday illness.
Brady Pupettes, led by Janice Davenport with 24 points and Sue Drybread 21, crushed Ballinger 61 21. Porcelia Bell grabbed eight rebounds Joyce Haynes six and Betty Fowler five as Brady advances to a Mason tournament.
The Rev. Lewis S. Redwine pastor of the Church of the Nazarene is hospitalized in Hanford California after a heart attack. His wife reports improvement but expects a three or four week delay for the trip home to Brady. He had traveled December 21 to visit his ill mother Mrs. Blanch Redwine who later regained consciousness before he became ill.
Mr and Mrs J P Williamson and their Sugar Land children were guests of Mr and Mrs Hart Fowler over the Christmas holidays.
A norther brought sleet snow and light rain to McCulloch County on December 30 1958. Brady registered 24.32 inches for the year with a cold spell dipping to 13 degrees on December 14 15 and 22 degrees on Monday night. The season ended with 24.32 inches total and 1958 ranking as normal but among higher local totals.
Mrs P C Clifton, 74, longtime resident of Lohn and Cow Creek, died Tuesday night at a Brownwood home of a daughter. Funeral set for 2 pm Thursday New Year’s Day at the Lohn Tabernacle with burial in Lohn Cemetery.
