At Ford Ranch near Brady tame wild deer visit the house each afternoon from October to spring seeking handouts of range cubes. About 20 to 25 deer, offspring of a pet doe, live in the pasture and rarely roam. Bucks appear more often than does or fawns, while ranch foreman’s wife recounted her failed attempt at hunting with a rifle.
Brownwood Jaycees award named for Jerry Simpson of Brady at Tuesday Golden Gloves finals. Simpson, 30, longtime Brady boxing coach and ex Golden Gloves boxer, received the tribute from Ed Devery before presenting the trophy to Willard Anderson. Randy Beakley claimed a peewee title. other Brady entrants saw mixed results.
The McCulloch County Red Cross mobilizes a Brady blood drive at First Christian Church on Wednesday February 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beta Sigma Phi sorority sponsors the event with doctors nurses and volunteers urging 18 to 60 year olds in good health to donate. Those aged 18 to 21 need parental consent. the drive supports local needs and wider Red Cross programs across the region.
The Brady Bulldogs outscored Lampasas 74 54 to win a second straight District 18-AA basketball crown. They will face Hillsboro in a bi district game at neutral Killeen next Monday or Tuesday depending on Killeen Belton results. Brady owns an 23 5 season mark with eight straight district wins under coach Ed Whiteley.
Brady High School's Bulldogs, aiming to stay sharp before next week's bi district game, will face Blanket Friday at 7 15 p m in Brownwood High School gym as part of a three game program featuring four district champions. Brownwood and Harlandale will play about 8 15 p m and Brownwood B teams meet Harlandale B around 6 p m. Coach Ed Whiteley says Blanket has a fine team and a fine record and hopes Brady fans attend.
A special stockholders meeting failed to approve dissolving the Brady Cooperative Poultry Association as only 105 of 770 members attended. Directors had asked for an 80 percent vote to sell property. 70 supported, 35 opposed. The co op, once a major turkey egg shipper, now runs only a Brady area meat processing plant.
The McCulloch County Community Chest raised 12286.56 toward a 14197.44 goal for 1960 61, missing the target by 1910. Expenses totaled 672.71, but enough funds remain to honor pledges to agencies as budgeted. Ramond Wilensky received thanks for chairing the drive. Edward Geeslin presided at the directors meeting with other directors present.
The Kimble Manard County singing convention will meet Sunday February 19 at 2 pm at the First Methodist Church in Menard.
Raymond Brown, 53, a Brady laborer, was shot in the left foot and ankle on East Main near Elms Streets. Pete Sims, 61, a World War I veteran, was arrested with a 410 shotgun after the incident. Brown was hospitalized for several days, while Sims remained jailed with charges undecided.
Burnet, champion of district 9-A, meets Clyde, winner of district 10-A, for the bi-district basketball title Tuesday night Feb 21 at 8 o'clock. Brady High gymnasium hosts as neutral site with Clyde and Burnet agreeing to the invitation. Admission is 60 cents for students and 1 for others. J C Petty leads Burnet schools.
Dr. May Owen of Fort Worth will address Brady High School Honor Banquet on Thursday March 9 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church at 7 30 p m. Lions Club sponsors the event to recognize students with outstanding academic work. Tickets cost 1 75 and are available at Archer Sporting Goods or from the Lions. Dr. Owen is the 95th president of the Texas Medical Association and the second woman to hold such a post in any state medical association. she is a TCU graduate and earned her medical degree in 1921 from Louisville Medical College and has served since 1928 as chief pathologist for Terrell Laboratories in Fort Worth.
