Brady ISD trustees resignations trim board and set elections
Two members of the Brady Independent School District Board of Trustees submitted resignations at the Monday meeting.Dr. G H Ricks and Wayne Rawlings left their posts and Dr Donald Pentecost was named to fill Ricks unexpired term. The board set the election for April 8 with incumbents K K Steffens Jean Williams and Dr Harry Priess facing re election. Filing opens immediately and ends March 4 at 5 pm with absentee ballots from March 14 to 31. The board approved a Civil Rights Act compliance agreement to secure federal aid and pursued a Texas Education Agency vocational survey to expand programs. Supt C A Reynolds said the district hopes to add a home making teacher and possibly Distributive Education and Industrial Education classes. New admin building furniture seven sewing machines 252 desks and about 6500 dollars in costs were approved.

Jeanine Seals, one of about 14 000 students, received her National Merit Scholarship certificate at a Brady High assembly. She is among the finalists chosen from roughly 1965 Merit Scholars. about 1600 finalists will win Merit Scholarships. Winners are due to be notified around March 20.

Melvin Trustees Extend Marshall Contract for Two Years
The Melvin Board of Trustees renewed Supt. Floyd Marshall's contract for two more years. Marshall has led the Melvin school system for six years and holds a Bachelors from McMurry College and an MA from Hardin-Simmons University. A trustee election is set for Saturday April 3 with incumbents Avert Carlson and W C Whitworth seeking re-election. Applications for ballot placement must be filed 80 days prior.

Mrs. Vivian Cowan 42 Dies in Placid
Mrs. Vivian Winona Cowan 42 of Placid died at 12:30 a m Monday in Medical and Surgical Hospital after a Saturday admission. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 4 30 p m in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel with Albert Alley officiating. Burial was in Placid Cemetery. She was born September 11 1922 at Fife and married Preston L Cowan in June 1941 at Winchell. Survived by husband two sons Gaylon of San Diego and Waylon of Brady, mother Bessie Finnigan of Mercury four brothers Reginald Finnigan Fort Worth Jack Danny and Jerry Finnigan of San Antonio three sisters Mrs Billy Turnell Brady Mrs Edna Williamson Mercury and Mrs Kathryn Cox Brownwood.

Million Dollar Rain Boosts February Total in Brady Area
A heavy February rain swept McCulloch County led by Brady reporting 1.49 inches, bringing the month total to 2.14 inches. Widespread showers drenched Pear Valley Waldrip and Salt Gap while Camp San Saba logged 1.90 inches. Bear Creek ran high and Brady Lake rose slightly as ground soaked. Forecasters expect more rain to fill water supplies and hint at a vibrant spring with bluebonnets already appearing along Texas highways.

The Board of Trustees renewed contracts for several principals through 1967. Brady High School principal Hoyd Hunt, Paul Huntington Jr High, J. V. Pearson North Ward, and A. Jy. Reed Jr Dunbar Fast Ward received extended contracts. South Ward principal E. J. Powell retired age but got a one year extension during the transition to the new elementary. KE. Reynolds' Mother Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
Mrs. M. Reynolds, 71, mother of Brady School Supt. A. Reynolds, died Friday at her Houston home, apparently from a heart attack. Born March 15, 1893 in Cooke County, she was a longtime Church of Christ member. Services were held in Houston and Gainesville conducted by Don Morris, with survivors including her son C. A. Reynolds, two daughters, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Eric Carlson Jr Dies at 24 in Brady Burial Tuesday
Eric Carlson Jr 24 died of pneumonia at his Brady home Sunday evening. Services set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wilkerson Chapel, burial in Live Oak Cemetery beside his father who died in 1949. Rev. Bertil Thorne of the Evangelical Free Church Georgetown officiated. Survivors include his mother Mrs. Eric Carlson sister Mrs. Rodrigue four brothers Tory Carlson Randohl Carlson Avert Carlson and Clarence Carlson plus several nieces and nephews. He lived at 1112 8 Church with his sister.

Sutton Named Principal of East China Elementary School
Harvey Sutton, seventh grade Engfish teacher at Brady Junior High, was named principal of the new East China Elementary School and will start at opening next September. He has served in Brady schools since 1946 with degrees from Howard Payne College and Southwest Texas State College and a law license in Texas. He previously taught at Melvin and served in the Armed Services.
