Strong north winds and a dramatic cold snap hit the Heart of Texas area. Temperatures swung from a high around 81 degrees to a 17 degree low as a front swept through McCulloch County, with winds up to 35 mph and damage to Brady Lake marina.
Rex Pakton Ryker of Abilene Christian College will speak at the McCulloch County Educational Association meeting on December 11 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Ryker, born in Texico New Mexico, holds a BA from ACC, an MA from State University of Iowa, and a PhD from the University of Florida. He has led civic efforts including ten years as chairman of the Speakers Bureau and roles with Kiwanis and Boy Scouts. Mrs A P Waldrep is program chairman.
City Council authorized a wage increase for sanitation pick up men from 1.75 to 2.00 per hour effective December 15. Officials also accepted the resignation of Ona James and discussed parking spaces for county officials. Mayor Lawler reported November operating bills around 21000 and a brighter financial status for Brady.
A bumper cotton crop strains Lohn gins with about 300 bales backlog as 90 trailers unload on gin lot and pasture. Ginner Joe Smith reports largest harvest since 1949 with 1,695 bales already ginned and more on the way from Lohn Valley and McCulloch County. Fife gin also busy with about 600 bales ginned. Delayed ginning due to late harvest and frost.
The Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital Board announces final plans for a 46 bed hospital wing. Almon Co. of Dallas commits about 900000 in revenue bonds paid from hospital revenue, with all pledges due by December 31 1972. Groundbreaking hoped for April 1 1973. city utilities and county road work to support site.
Brady High School Key Club begins its annual toy drive for underprivileged children. For toy donations to be repaired call 597-2703 during the day. after 5 p m call 597-5841 or 597-1488.
Brady High School inducted 15 National Honor Society members on a Wednesday ceremony led by Frank Roddie. He urged students to value education, pursue rewarding work, stand up for beliefs, and contribute to their towns while noting many will enter trades or continue learning beyond high school. Fifteen inductees include five seniors and ten juniors.
E. J. Powell retired educator and coach of the Brady show’s died suddenly at home from an apparent heart attack at 9 20 a m Thursday. Funeral services are pending at Wilkerson Funeral Home. A former Distinguished Service Award recipient of the Brady Chamber of Commerce he was a First Baptist Church member and is survived by his wife Mary Jo.
