City and Gas Company Strike 12 Percent Rate Accord

Telephone Company offers 20 percent rate increase

The City Council heard a 20 percent rate hike proposal from Southwestern States Telephone Company on Tuesday night. Company official John D. Allen said the offer is lower than hoped but may be considered, noting that current requests would raise a one party business line from $6 to $9.50 and a four party residence from $2.25 to $3.75. He stressed it has been almost a year since the filing and that the firm must fund system improvements, having absorbed seven wage boosts in recent years.

Brouillette Taken to Prison for 45-Year Murder Term

Sheriff Luke Vogel escorted Walter Brouillette from Coleman to Huntsville where he will serve a 45 year state penitentiary sentence after a jury found him guilty of murder in connection with the February fatal shooting of O. C. Otte of Fife. Accompanying the sheriff was Raymond Davee of Zapata, a former Brady police officer now a game warden.
