Lonnie Sansom Found Dead in Live Oak Creek

Lonnie Prestle Sansom age 74 was found dead face down in Live Oak Creek near Brady after a note indicated the spot. Authorities report throat cuts and a razor found nearby with his hat and glasses, and an inquest verdict awaited further investigation. Survivors include his wife Pearl Sansom and children Woodrow Allen and six others. Funeral services set for 2 p m at Wilkerson Funeral Home with burial in Cox Cemetery Mercury.

Charles Maynor of Zephyr is hired to replace J D Knutson as Lohn High School Eagles coach. Knutson resigns to teach vocational agriculture in Wall while his wife teaches sixth grade. Maynor, a Howard Payne College graduate, coached six man football at Toyah last year and reports to Lohn August 25.

County Tax Rate Boosted 7 Cents

The McCulloch County Commissioners Court votes to raise the county tax rate by seven cents per $100 valuation from $1.29 to $1.56. The higher rate will not become effective, however, until conditions or approvals are met.

Funeral Held for W T Harris at 78

Funeral services for Wilam T Harris 78 were held at 10 a m Thursday at Brady Presbyterian Church with burial in Brady Cemetery. He died Tuesday at home 501 West 13th Street and is survived by his wife sister and nieces and nephews. Harris born in 1879 in Birer Sr moved to Texas and practiced law before public service on the McCulloch County Ration Board in World War II. His family lived in Brady since 1937.

Marriage license fees rise in Texas counties

Effective August 23, the cost of a marriage license in the County Clerk's office and throughout Texas increases from two to three dollars. Other clerk’s office fees rise as well with higher charges for filing suits, as approved by the last Legislature.

Brouillette Found Guilty in Otte Killing and Detained

Brouillette and Nye Walter Brouillette were found guilty of the fatal shooting of O. C. Otte of Fife last February. The jury returned the verdict and Brouillette was brought to Mc Culloch County jail this week. He faces transfer to the state penitentiary likely next week.

March of Dimes sends $2500 to local chapter

The McCulloch County March of Dimes chapter received 2500 from the national foundation to aid local polio patients. Chapter chairman Roger George said funds from January’s drive covered county needs, with over 4000 spent this year on six patients for braces nursing care and doctor bills. He noted the national group backs chapters to finish the year and urged vaccination for under fours to curb polio.

Hottest July Day Since 1954 Reaches 106 Degrees

Weather records show 1166 degrees heat on a July day tied to 1954 when 108 degrees was reached. Mrs. Jake Cochran, the official weather observer, notes Monday reached 104 and Wednesday 103 with Thursday likely over 100 as no rain fell.

City considers Brady Creek lake plan to fund city water needs

A chamber of commerce committee led by Hardin Jones proposes building a Brady Creek lake three miles west of Brady to supply municipal water for 48, with recreational use possible. The plan outlines funding, tax and rate impacts, and cites two-year SCS flood-control work and conflict with two remaining SCS dams, urging a timely yes or no decision.

Junior High Band School Set Next Week

Band school for Urad Junior High runs one week from Monday August 5 to Saturday August 10. Seventh and eighth grade students meet at 9:00 am and sixth graders at 1:00 pm in the junior high band hall. All new and returning students are urged to attend, band director Joe McDonough said.

Too Hot Go Ake a Swim Pool Opens for Paid Swimmers

City pool opens daily from noon to six for paid swimmers with Sunday hours 2 to 6 pm. Pool keeper K Y Owens says water is changed twice a week, Tuesday and Friday nights, to stay clean. Admission 60 cents for others, free for under two. receipts fund free summer swimming. Pool remains open until about August 22.

The McCulloch County Electric Co op will hold its annual membership meeting in the Brady Theatre on Thursday August 15 from 1 p m to 4 45 p m The session will occur in the air conditioned Brady Theatre building.

Farm Bureau Queen To Receive Lugeage

The Farm Bureau in McCulloch County will crown a queen at a program August 20 in Brady High School auditorium at 8 p.m. Gifts will be given to other contestants. The county queen may enter the district contest August 23 in Fredericksburg at the Junior High School auditorium. A parade is planned for 4 p.m. followed by the contest at 8 p.m. The state contest will be in November at the Baker Hotel in Dallas.
