Proxmire aims at more congressional control of banking system
A 1970s commentary notes Senator William Proxmire’s push to limit Federal Reserve autonomy and increase congressional oversight of monetary policy. It argues for transparency in future policy and highlights the balance between banking power, competition, and consumer protection amid inflation concerns. The piece ends with a family obituary note for Nancy Odean Landrum.

State Capital Highlights Sidelights on a Crowded Legislative Finish
Sidelights note the 64th Legislature faces a wild finish with over 2 200 House bills and nearly 1 100 Senate measures. Few bills reach passage as unfinished business dominates committees and budget talks stall. Federal water standards may cost Texas billions before 1983 as cities and industry brace for stricter pollution controls.

Texas seeks eight year plan to make waters fit for swimming
The ESS Association acts to require all rivers lakes and coastal areas to be swimmable within eight years. The Texas Water Quality Board estimates city wastewater cleanup would cost 400 million dollars yearly if deadlines are met. Industries could add three billion. Senate approved a constitutional revision sending the issue to the November 4 statewide ballot. Campaigns mobilize for a nearly identical article by article rewrite of the 1974 convention recommendations. Funds will be provided to educate voters on the measure.
