Two cousins trace their Smith family lineage back generations with notes on Ransom David Smith and Lucy Stafford from Tennessee. The piece cites Smith Brothers cough drops, Life and Time Life books, and Texas lore including the XIT Ranch and Arch Sneed’s injury, ending with a continuation note.
The Brady Bulldog Band earned a Division I rating and its 10th straight Sweepstakes Award at the University League concert and sight reading event in Ballinger. The group also held top marks in marching, drawing praise from judges and officials as they returned to Brady amid a large crowd.
Heart of Texas Cow Belles led by president Mrs. Dow Neal met April 15 to discuss educating Mr and Mrs Consumer about beef industry realities. She cited Beef vs Grain debates from a convention panel and urged legislators’ input as members plan July Jubilee parade Jaycee Fair Goat Cook-Off outreach and school materials.
In a special trustee meeting 12 bids were opened for the Brady High School industrial arts and drafting building. Bids ranged from 44,275 by Builders Supply to 56,493 by Gray Associates. The board will award the contract after tabulating specifications while considering three sites near 11th and Wall Streets.
Victor Hernandez Sr. of Brady died Tuesday at 6:20 p m in Temple Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Thursday at St Patrick s Catholic Church with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Born March 6 1914 in Ozona he lived much of his life in Brady as a city employee at the golf course. He married Maresilva Benavides April 23 1948. Survivors include his wife three daughters two sons a sister and four grandchildren.
In a low turnout McCulloch County backed both amendments on the ballot. Voters supported No 1 retirement and pension benefits for retirees and state workers by 370 to 160, and No 2 a pay raise for legislators by 274 to 256.
Final registration for the summer Brady Youth Baseball Program will be held Friday at 7 30 p m in the Boy Scout Lodge. Participants aged 7 through 15 must bring application birth certificates and insurance fees of 2 75 for ages 7 12 or 4 25 for ages 13 15. A managers coaches meeting will occur during this time and all prospective and existing sign ups are urged to attend.
State Comptroller Bob Bullock reports McCulloch County received 15 percent of local mixed drink taxes for the first quarter of 1975 totaling $179. The county’s share came from $1,198 in local tax collections while the state kept 85 percent.
City police reported a rise in petty thefts with reports from Sgt. James Titus. Builders Supply on South Bridge was broken into and a small calculator and eight track tape player were stolen through a rear window. Numerous bicycles have been stolen, with some later recovered.
Archery enthusiasts are notified of a meeting on April 30 at 7 30 p m in the Chamber of Commerce conference room. An experienced instructor with over 20 years of experience will give instructions. All interested persons are invited to attend.
The Lohn Valley Protective Association announces its annual meeting for Sunday at the Cornill Ranch northeast of Lohn. The business session starts at 11 a.m. with lunch served about 12 noon.
