Heart of Texas Riders to Sponsor Appaloosa Show in Brady

The Heart of Texas Riding Association will sponsor an Appaloosa Horse Show in Brady on April 24 approved by the Texas Appaloosa Horse Club. Entries close at 9 am on April 24 with fees of 6 dollars per halter class 10 dollars plus 6 office per horse for performance classes youth classes 3 dollars. Melroy Powell of Eden will judge. Grand champions trophies and rosettes awarded in each division. The show features halter classes for mares and stallions, and performance events including reining western pleasure camas prairie stump racing calf roping and championship roping with buckles trophies and ribbons. The Appaloosa breed tracing to Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark history. Population growth noted from 8308 registrations in 1959 to 47131 in 1964.

Surprise: Meters removed from inside of plaza

City Council enacted an experimental action removing parking meters from the courthouse plaza last Saturday. Half the meter income goes to Richards Park. the council considers unmetered spaces and four hour parking as options to ease crowding and reduce frequent payments.

Brady High School Band Wins UIL Contest Trophies

The Brady High School band returned from Snyder UIL contest with a first division in sight reading and second division in concert playing, adding marching and sight reading trophies. Band director James Mallow noted they nearly swept all stakes and plans an overnight trip to Six Flags on May 7-8 for the marching contest.

Owens child breaks arm after fall at home

Kay Ann Owens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. Y. Owens, fell at her home Monday and broke an arm. She was taken to San Angelo Monday night to consult a bone specialist.

Former McCulloch Man In Movie Coming Soon

Billy Dee Blackwell from Melvin will appear in the film Indian Paint set for Tex theatre April 22 to 24. He plays Sukato, a Snake Tribe chieftain, with Jay Silverheels and Johnny Crawford co starring in a family movie filmed in the Brazos River country of North Central Texas.

13 4-H Teams Compete at County District Trials

The 1965 County 4-H Awards contest in South Ward Auditorium featured 18 teams with 32 4-Hers. Thirteen teams advance to the district meet in San Angelo. Winners include Carolyn Huffman Sylvia Huffman Rochelle in Senior Co op and Jane Harper Brady Junior Foods Nutrition First.

Brady High School girls basketball honors night honors both B team and A team members. The McMillan home hosted the event with trophies for B team players Devanah Sessions Janice Flanagin Lucy Ledezma Joyce Marsden Sue McMillan Willie Mae Reeves and Patty Weaver and manager Shirley Lively Joy Russell. A team jackets awarded to Marvel Fisher Beba Harris Kay Lankford Sara Ledezma Genevia Lott Linda Parker Barbara Randall Frances Roberts Mary Ziriax and manager Shirley Wooten. The Best Fan award for 1965 went to Mr. and Mrs. Leon McMillan who received a white basketball autographed by players.

Brady Board Accepts North Ward Elementary Building

The Brady School Board approved the new North Ward Elementary School building and will move fourth and fifth grades into the new rooms for the rest of the year. The project is part of remodeling and expansion across Brady schools. Plans to remodel the high school auditorium are also being considered. Reynolds, appointed to study costs for enlarging the stage and updating seating and painting, notes money will be the big problem.

Fort Hood divers assist Brady Lake rescue effort

Scuba divers from Fort Hood Texas and Dyess AFB Abilene helped in a Brady Lake drowning rescue and recovery. Jerry White located Woodrow Riley and divers recovered the body as residents praised the teams and Mayor Rudder thanked them for their efforts.

The body of Woodrow Riley 53 of Melvin was recovered from Brady Lake after a boating accident. Divers Stuart Lemke and Jerry White located the body in the same position as earlier. Funeral services were held at Day Loveless Chapel Eden with burial in Melvin Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Alexa Jo Riley and four sisters.

Faculty Named For Brady's New Grade School

Supt. C. A. Reynolds announces teachers for Brady's south side Stanburn Addition elementary. New staff includes Mrs. Roger George first grade, Mrs. Ira Turner second grade, Mrs. C. A. Reynolds third grade, Mrs. Walter L. Bryson fourth grade, and Harvey Sutton fifth grade and principal.

Melvin School Board Re-Elects Teachers for Another Year

The Melvin School Board re elected all district teachers for the coming year. Named were E Bridge principal Talmage Wood vocational agriculture Miss Sharon Kay McDonald homemaking Mrs Benton Cain English Don Gipson mathematics and coach. Grade School teachers re elected included Orwell T Wells principal Benton Cain Mrs Lucile Middleton Mrs Orwell T Wells Mrs D C Middleton and Mrs Faye Taylor. Floyd Marshalls contract as superintendent was extended earlier. John Bratton was named president George D J vice president and Billy Ray Taliaferro secretary.

Ex McCulloch Man C C Turnell Dies in Colorado

C C Turnell 64 a native of McCulloch County and longtime Durango Colorado resident died Tuesday night April 6 after a three year illness. Born Milburn he grew up in the Plac id community and moved from McCulloch County about 49 years ago. Funeral in Durango attended by brother W C Turnell and two sisters Mrs C O Poe and Mrs Vida Barnett all of Brady.

Mrs Frank Roddie Jr Undergoes Back Surgery in San Antonio

Mrs. Frank Roddie Jr underwent back surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio last Saturday. She is progressing well and her husband expects to bring her home next Saturday. Her room number is 508D.

Keim Elected President of St. Patrick's Club

The St. Patrick's Men's Club held a church rectory meeting to elect officers. Harold Keim was named president, Chester Jacoby vice president, and R F Moseley secretary treasurer. Projects for the coming year were outlined and monthly meetings set for the first Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Salter Receives Gold Watch For Brady Fire Service

Howard Salter is honored with a gold watch for long service to the Brady Fire Department. Johnny Rudder presents the award at a combined Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary meeting on April 5. Salter began as a 1929 volunteer, later became the only paid man, held multiple officer roles, led as fire chief for 17 years, and now serves as Brady fire marshal. He has attended 21 fire and fire marshal schools at A&M University and held leadership in district and state associations.
