Brady Lake Tragedy Claims Three in Tuesday Accident

Three Melvin men longtime anglers drowned after their boat capsized on Brady Lake during a Tuesday accident. Norwood swam to shore as Middleton and Riley remained in distress. local rescuers including Billy Jack Neal and George Carruthers aided the search, with the Brady Fire Department deploying lights and grappling gear through the night. Middleton, 40, a McCulloch County rancher and grain dealer, and Riley, 53, a farmer-rancher, were identified as the deceased. survivors include Middleton’s wife Velma, a teacher, and several siblings and relatives. Funeral services for Middleton were held at Wilkerson Chapel with burial in Melvin Cemetery.

Search Continues For Body Of One Victim At Brady Lake

The long search for the body of Woodrow Riley, a drowning victim at Brady Lake Tuesday night, continued through Wednesday night with a large team of divers and many local, county, state, and federal agencies. Sheriff Luke Vogel directed the operation as divers from Fort Hood Killeen Abilene and Dyess Air Force Base joined in with local fire departments and law enforcement.

Near Tragedy Averted When Cruiser Explodes

A Brady Lake near tragedy occurred Sunday afternoon when Bluford Lawrence's 25 ft cabin cruiser exploded and sank in 40 feet of water. Lawrence and sons Steve six and Dennis ten, plus Richard Young, Dewey Young, and other relatives were aboard. Richard Young was thrown 26 feet into the water and the group later rescued by Harold Stephens and Earl Finlay. Both Steve and Lawrence suffered burns. Steve faces hospital care for first to third degree burns, while Lawrence bears burns on both arms. Lawrence values salvage of the boat but is grateful to be alive.

Brady City Boating Safety Notice Under Texas Act

The City of Brady warns the public about Texas Water Safety Act provisions for boats. Requirements include boat licensing and numbering, navigation lights from sunset to sunrise, reporting certain accidents, and at least one U S Coast Guard approved life preserver per person aboard. Brady ordinance adds lake safety rules for boaters swimmers and skiers. Penalties include 50 to 500 dollars or up to six months jail for operating a boat under influence.

Sunrise Service at Mercury Near Mt Calvary Easter

Mt Calvary Lutheran Church of Brady sponsors the Heart of Texas Easter Sunrise Service one mile east of Mercury at 6 30 a m on Easter morning. This 15th annual service offers transportation up the hill for older attendees and invites the public to join in worship of the Risen Lord as described by Rev J Arthur Rebber.

City Worker’s Hand Mangled in Tuesday Mishap

B R Turner city employee was injured on a sanitation truck about 3 30 Tuesday afternoon. His right hand was caught in the packet mechanism and mangled. He was taken to Shannon Hospital San Angelo in room 456 on the fourth floor. Turner lives at 206 W Victoria and has worked for the city since 1958.

Incumbents Win Re election in Brady City Council Race

The Brady City Council re elected all three incumbents as 622 votes were cast. Arch er led with 322 votes, Roger George 319, and Ralph Micklethwait 295, while challengers Odis Cox, Edward Williams, Johnny Miller, and Ed Davenport trailed. The council declared the trio re elected after canvassing returns.

Brady ISD trustees name Kidd president and assign new roles

The Brady Independent School District trustees re elected M. E. Kidd as president and appointed Jean F. Williams first vice president K. K. Steffens second vice president and Dr Harry Friess secretary for the coming year. They set a school attendance boundary for the new Fast China elementary with a line from 17th Street to Mason Road and then to Calf Creek roads. The plan sends bus students from Voca Camp San Saba and Calf Creek areas to the new school which will have one section per grade 1 through 5. The board approved eight week classes for non English speaking preschoolers continuing a long standing program. They accepted the administration building from C B Oates and will accept the North Ward school project no later than Wednesday.

McCulloch Farmers Form Boll Weevil Fight Group

McCulloch County cotton farmers met at the Lohn Tabernacle to launch Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Inc a 31 county group aiming to improve production and markets and combat boll weevil. A Brady representative group was named to the organization committee with Finlay Rudolph as steering liaisons. The drive needs 1000 to start and plans a 50 cent per bale voluntary 1964 assessment with first benefits on the 1966 crop.

Bulldog Band Off To Snyder Contest

The Brady Bulldog Band departs at 6 a m for Snyder to compete in the UIL concert and sight reading contest. They already won first division marching at San Angelo and may claim the sweepstakes with a top concert and sight reading showing. A separate plan-of-attack outlines boll weevil control and insect education. Speaker Newborn Smith of Ballinger addressed about 40 attendees at the Monday meeting.

Santone Firm Secures Brady Post Office Upgrade Contract

A Brady telegram reports D. EF. W., Inc. of San Antonio won the air conditioning and lighting contract for the Brady post office. Estimated cost is 68,500 dollars for central heating, new lighting, roofing and repainting including the Soil Conservation Service offices downstairs. Work to begin in early April per General Services Administration to postmaster Mrs Barry C Francks.

Funeral for Virginia Carlson at First Methodist Church

Funeral services for Virginia Carlson aged 22 will be held at 10 a m in the First Methodist Church where she was a member. The Rev Lame Leifeste will conduct with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery. pallbearers named are Jerry Kimbrough Gene Seliman Don Taylor Edward Jones Alvin Bolton and Max Cox. She died Tuesday morning at her home of an apparent cerebral hemorrhage with autopsy pending at San Angelo.
