William Estes Dies at 73 in Rochelle

William B. Estes, 73, of Rochelle died Wednesday at Sheffield Rest Home No. 2. Services were held Thursday at Rockwood Methodist Church with Rev. Lamar Leiceste officiating. Burial in Rockwood Cemetery. Born February 2, 1903 in Rockwood, he was a retired farmer and Methodist. Survivors include son Bennie C. Estes and six grandchildren among four daughters, four brothers, three sisters, and seven great grandchildren.

Spiller Wins Chamber DS Award at Brady Banquet

Dr. Bill Boswell announced Wayne Spiller as the Distinguished Service Award recipient at the Brady Chamber of Commerce annual meeting. Spiller, a rancher and historian active in McCulloch County, has written on local history and led museum efforts, with proceeds from his book going to the Heart of Texas Historical Museum. The event drew about 400 attendees and featured Keynote speaker David Day and organ music by Mary Carter.

April Showers Drench Brady and McCulloch Counties

Scattered rain showers continue across the Heart of Texas with Brady and McCulloch Counties hit by a severe thunderstorm area on Wednesday. Paul Engdahl reported hail and up to two inches of rain at East Sweden while Kenneth Mitchell noted Rochelle area rainfall from a half inch to three inches.

School Transfer Deadline Set for April 30

McCulloch County schools announce the transfer deadline for moving between districts is April 30. Students already enrolled in a transferred school will receive the required forms to take home for parent or guardian signatures.

Brady City Council Sees HUD Grant Invitation Rejected

In Brady, a HUD letter informed the city that no full application for Fiscal Year 1976 Community Grant Funds would be invited due to a low preliminary rating. The city retains first year funding for Hallum Draw sewer work and some street projects while awaiting future guidelines and another application.

Spring Meet Opens at G Rollie White Downs With Futurity Derby

The four day event starts this weekend with a Futurity Quarter Horse Derby and Thoroughbred Derby at G Rollie White Downs. Final nominations paid, purses expected to top 30 000 for the Futurity with 71 horses eligible. Quarter Horse Derby purse about 9000 with 26 horses left as 125 payments due. Thoroughbred Derby field 15 with purse over 4000. Races run over two weekends April 17 18 finals.

Kerrville Mason Favored In 35th Brady Relays

Brady coach Jimmy Williams says Mason is the clear favorite in Division I and Troy leads Division II as the 35th Brady Relays open at 2:30 p.m. Friday with 13 teams, field events first and running prelims at 3 p.m. Last year’s winners were Brady and Mason.
