Bowie state observances start Sunday with a baccalaureate at 8 p.m. May 21 in the high school auditorium. Commencement events run May 25 and May 26, with 101 eighth graders and 71 seniors to receive diplomas. Superintendent Walter B. Alexander provided the program details.
Bowie Youth Council approves summer recreation plan with a $1200 operating budget. Bowie Lions Club vows to match up to $600, and July 4th Pelham Park picnic aims to raise funds for the program. Three paid supervisors and several adult leaders to guide activities.
State Inspector Dr. H. L. Underwood conducts tuberculosis examination of dairy cattle in Bowie County through June 1. He will inspect farms to identify infected animals and ensure dairy herds meet health standards.
Sheriff Jameson arrested four boys in connection with vandalism at the Griffin residence in Lone Star. They are on bond awaiting Grand Jury action as furniture and most household items were found hacked to pieces.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Nickles and their daughter Ann of Denver Cole visited here last week.
Bowie High Band led by George Rucker competed with 78 bands from four states at Enid Oklahoma. Bowie earned a Second Division rating in concert and marching and narrowly missed First by 2.4 points. White Oak captured First Division in both events in Class B.
G H Golden after 32 years in business sells the Golden Surber Hardware Company to W H Stephens a longtime Bowie resident who formerly ran Stephens Feed and Grain. Stephens will also run his peanut seed business from the new location and serve former Golden Surber patrons and new customers while Golden retires as a well known local figure.
Impressive last rites were held May 10 at McPherson National Cemetery Maxwell Nebraska for T Sgt Dewey A Deweber killed in Germany November 26 1944 He was born January 3 1924 A radio operator and gunner on a B 17 his body was recently returned for reburial Parents Mr and Mrs W A Deweber of Postoak and his brother Billy Joe attended the funeral Also Vera Scarber was present The picture shows Sgt Deweber receiving a medal of honor during the war.
Bowie residents pursue a precise census count while Texas Company reports a successful Boedeker No. 1 well three miles west. New wildcat locations near Bowie follow, with multiple rigs active in Montague and surrounding counties.
Virgil Blair and A L Allison report 58 Jersey heifers placed with club boys under a Bowie Rotary Club initiative later run by the Chamber of Commerce. Donations totaled $4 680, with the herd insured for $16 per head and offspring counted toward further expansion.
A large group of Bowie farmers and neighbors received the Upper Elm-Red Soil Conservation Districts special award at a Gainesville banquet. Fred Preuninger and co‑operating neighbors were honored for 1949 work on sixteen farms totaling 2480 acres in Lindale. The group carried out contour farming cover cropping and other soil conservation practices and coordinated seed fertilizer and equipment needs.
Walter B. Alexander presented his resignation as superintendent to the Bowie Independent School District Board on Tuesday night effective August 31 1950. The board will consider applicants for a successor with ample time for deliberation. Alexander has served twelve years guiding growth from 22 to 47 teachers and district enrollment expansion.
The Bowie Art Club hosts a spring exhibition Friday May 19 from 3 to 9 p.m. in the City Auditorium basement. ceramics clay modeling and student works guided by Adrian Hill from Midwestern University accompany club displays. Club officers are Mrs. Mabel Goodwin president Mrs. Grace Morgan vice president and Mrs. Artie Cone secretary.
Three new residences are under construction at Montague. A five room bath home with attached garage for Mr. and Mrs. True Barbee is built by Jim Frazier and Wadsworth Brothers. A.P. Woods will have a four room house by Jim Frazier, and Marvin London’s home will be rented with Tom Romie as builder. Lyon Matthews Lumber of Bowie supplied materials.
At a Monday night meeting Cham her of Commerce directors, President Jack Slayden named a Safety Committee including H. L. Turns Mark High and Paul Taliaferro to draft a safety program. Paul Taliaferro, head of the Youth Council, reported the launch of a summer recreation program.
