Carl Shurtleff grows alfalfa near Bowie with first cutting this week and plans a larger planting this fall. A Sunset reunion and memorial day event is promised for Sunday for former residents and neighbors. The piece also notes community concerns from soil conservation to public health and fly control.
Residents and volunteers are urged to join a cemetery working event at Pleasant Hill on Tuesday May 30 to help with upkeep and maintenance tasks at the site.
The season opener Tuesday May 23 saw Lathams defeat Continental 10-3 as crowds attended. Vashti beat Bowie Wild Cats 7-3 in the other featured game with a VFW sponsored league schedule generating strong local enthusiasm.
Denver Oil Company of Oklahoma City constructs a large ten pump, super modern gas station in Bowie in the 1000 block on East Wise. Construction engineer C. H. Sexton says 31 similar stations operate near Oklahoma City and this site is due to open around July 1 with 12 000 gallon underground storage tanks and a glass and steel building. Lot frontage on Wise street measures 200 feet.
Arch Hicks of Rocky Point southwest of Bowie received soil conservation district honors at a Decatur banquet and meeting for the Upper West Fork District. Bowie attendees included W. E. Farrell Virgil Blair N. W. Tage H. I. Trout Johnny Inman L. T. Hunter Poe Vandiment A. L. Allison and K. R. Dort. Dolores Garrett Newport won best essay. Dooley Dawson of Second National Bank Houston spoke as the program's featured speaker. Hunter Leona reported district accomplishments.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary of the Speake-Meyer Post in Bowie voted at a called meeting to support a proposed youth recreation plan from twenty Bowie organizations. The poppy sale in Bowie Monday will raise funds to aid needy veteran families. Mrs. Lewis Hancock presided over the meeting which had good attendance and ended with a social and refreshments.
Ed Blackmon of the Upper Red Soil Conservation District board attended a Wednesday meeting in Gainesville.
Bowie Business and Professional Women's Club installed its new officers May 23 at Morrow's Coffee Shop in a candlelight ceremony. The slate included Ermyntrude McNatt as president LaRue Allison as vice president Lara Dean Davis recording secretary Frieda Hyatt reporter Lurlene Craver treasurer Clara Hoeldtke as corresponding secretary. The group voted $50 to the Youth Summer Program and named a yearbook committee.
Forty eight Bowies graduating class will travel to Monterey Mexico with parents and two teachers Miss Willie Dickerman and Mrs Catherine Hastings. Funds totaled about 800 dollars funded by the class and parents including a bonded Continental Bus charter. Two private cars accompany the bus and all are chaperoned.
Vera Abbott Rogers of Stoneburg, formerly Bowie, announces her candidacy for District Clerk. A Bowie High School graduate she has pursued legal study part time while raising two children and plans to earn an LL B through La Salle Extension with hopes to continue at an accredited law school.
Vacation Bible School details from three churches include Church of Christ sessions from May 29 to June 29 with daily classes 9 to 11 a.m. First Presbyterian hosts June 12 to 23 led by trained staff. First Baptist runs June 5 to 16 directed by Rev. A. D. Seago with a large corps of workers.
Real estate activity in Bowie area detailed by Hallie Collins. Herman Fox buys 10 acres across from Continental Yards on Highway 81 north of Bowie for a ranch style home. James W. Henry purchases the C. J. King home of 5 rooms and grounds. T. W. Nichols buys Mrs Ora Mansfield corner lot for a home. Homer Bishop acquires 11 lots in Easley Addition for a large ranch style house. Elton Winton buys a Belcherville road lot for a home. C. E. Campbell acquires Highway 81 plot to build a drive in theatre. Collins & Collins forms as Clifford Collins joins the business.
Mr and Mrs T B Walters of Jasper Texas visited in Bowie this week with his sister Mrs E W Wright.
Elections will be held in Bowie and the communities of Hancock and Newport on May 27 to vote on consolidating these districts with Bowie Independent School District. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Bowie City Auditorium and district schools. Voters under 60 need tax receipts. those 60 and over may vote without. A second election on June 7 will consider consolidating Salona and Bowie districts.
Bowie golfers outplayed Nocona 14 to 12 last Sunday in a 52 player event. The match shows rising interest this season. Bowie will play at Jacksboro next Sunday.
In observance of National Memorial Day the Bowie post office will be closed all day Tuesday May 30 except for a one hour window from 8 to 9 a.m. for stamps and packages. There will be one city delivery but no rural deliveries. Local businesses are not expected to observe the holiday.
The 1948 U S Census of Business reports Montague County retail wholesale and service establishments show a sharp rise from 1939 to 1948. Bowie lists 108 retail outlets with 5 837 000 in sales. Nocona has 77 outlets totaling 4 895 000. county totals reach 6 132 000 in Bowie alone and 5 074 000 countywide for other districts. bell dedication noted at Speake-Meyer Post 252 to honor Legion liberty and vigilance.
Graduation exercises in Bowie close with 71 high school seniors to receive diplomas tonight at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Delma Deaver gives the Salutory and Charlene Privitt the Valedictory, with diplomas handed by Supt. Walter Alexander. Lions Club awards go to G. Doc Jackson. The Baccalaureate address was by Rev. G. B. Bradshaw.
W G Yates Bowie Clinic business manager returns from a reunion of 200 American ex-prisoners of war from the German camp Aflag 64 in Zubin Poland. He traveled from Dallas on an Army transport and attended a banquet at Toots Shore's in New York after escaping via Russia and being captured at Salerno Italy while wounded.
Exceptional luck gave David Seitz and Bill Koonce a productive trot line haul at Lake Bowie on Tuesday. They landed more than 30 Channel cat weighing from under a pound to 2 pounds using cut bait.
State Senator R. L. Proffer of Denton county announces his candidacy for a second term. His district covers Montague Wise Jack Denton Parker and Palo Pinto counties. He praises legislative accomplishments and plans to visit more voters while teaching this spring at State Teachers College.
