Rhythm bands from Montague County towns and rural sections competed for honors at the high school auditorium. Nocona South Ward took first place, Prairie Point was second, Bowie East Ward third, and Bowie South Ward also placed among top honors.
The schedule lists events from March 24 to April 1 including arithmetic, picture memory, spelling, declamations, ready writers, debate and track preliminaries. Activities involve A Ward School B Grammar Schools C High Schools with finals and venues noted. Schedule covers rural declamations, speaking events, and playground ball on April 1.
Fourth Bowie North Ward finished fourth with Saint Jo sixth. Valley View Stoneburner and Bonita did not place. Belcherivlle won rural section with Spencer second. Bonita was the sole entrant in the one act play presenting Not Such A Goose. They will perform at the county meet in Wichita Falls on April 1.
Rev M L Meek of Ft Worth accepts temporary pastorate at First Christian Church and will lead services twice each Sunday starting March 26. A noted denomination speaker, he is an Edwards University graduate and pursuing postgraduate work at Texas Christian University.
The Montague County Federation of Women’s Clubs will meet in Bowie on Friday March 31. The session starts 10:00 a.m. and ends at noon followed by a covered dish luncheon. Mrs. Ben G. O’Neal of Wichita Falls will be principal speaker. delegates and reports from all clubs are urged to attend.
Mrs Rosa Johnson 49 died at her home west of Stoneburg Saturday after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church of Stoneburg Sunday with Rev A J Quinn officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery Burgess Funeral Home directed. She was a native Texan who had lived in Stoneburg for two years. Survived by husband Charlie Johnson four sons and one daughter.
Cedar posts marking Bowie city limits greet travelers from highways. Placed this week by a Garden Club committee led by Mrs Renne Allred Sr with Mrs B A Wells and Mrs J P Kearby Jr. Donated by local clubs. Highway Commission to beautify the plot.
News editor Frieda Thomas Bryan presents Love's Victory based on First Corinthians chapter thirteen. The sacred musical runs about 50 minutes with seven leading singers and has been staged at venues in Dallas Bowie Wichita Falls and Decatur. Bryan, Bowie News former news editor, has written several plays and feature stories.
Entry blanks are being received daily for the Fiddle Band Contest sponsored by the Bowie Chamber of Commerce. The event, free to the public, offers prizes of 15.00 10.00 and 5.00 for first second and third. Ned Horton serves as master of ceremonies. The contest starts at 7 30 Friday evening at the City Auditorium.
Miss Estell Miller Miss Lizzie Mae Shoemaker Miss Gladys Chandler and Miss Agnes Lacy attended the Marion Anderson Concert in Fort Worth on Sunday afternoon.
Bowie mayor I F M Paire proclaims the first week in April as clean-up week urging citizens to place old cans and bottles in visible containers for collection by the truck and removal from the city streets.
Mrs. Mary Ann Tutin Allen a Bowie resident since 1881 died at her home Monday night after years of illness. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church with Rev. J. H. Westbrook officiating and burial in Elmwood Cemetery beside her husband. Survived by two daughters four grandchildren a brother and three sisters. Burial followed a long civic involvement including the Thursday Club and City Library leadership.
George Rucker leads a 30 member High School Band preparing for Regional State Contests in Waco on March 6 and April 1. They will enter band and marching contests with solo, ensemble and cornet trio entries led by Thom as Ayres Selwyn Willis David Latham and others. The band has a history of prizes including a silver trophy in 1936 and multiple top finishes in Vernon.
Two young men from Bowie surrender to Christian ministry after a Baptist Church revival. Dewey Barlow son of Fred and Mrs Barlow and partner in Barlow Grocery and Market will deliver his first sermon Sunday at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church. David Garlington who runs an Insurance and Auto Loans business will preach Sunday at 7 45 PM. The public is invited.
Mrs Jodie Webster and children of Fremont Texas join Mr and Mrs Lacy Phillip and Billie Bob Holland of Estelline as guests of Mr and Mrs O R Baker recently.
George Brashear, president of the Southwest Montague County Singing Convention, will preside at an all day meeting Sunday March 26. G Doc Jackson Barney Whitehead and Henry Parks helped arrange the program for the event with more than 6000 expected to attend.
Ogden Clarke of Bowie has entered the race for Alderman in Ward One subject to the April 4 city election. Clarke cites long residence and business experience as qualifications and pledges to serve Bowie’s best interests.
Northwestern State Teachers College Alva Oklahoma choirs plans a free 11 o clock Thursday concert marching to a six day 900 mile tour across Oklahoma and North Texas. The forty five voice group features soloists Belva Hardy William Densing er and Frank Whiteside with director Rh B J Hardy.
J Oxter Campbell a Bowie resident of forty years and thirty in business runs for Alderman in the First Ward promising city unity and council harmony. David Garlington a Bowie businessman of five years seeks the Second Ward seat pledging service and city savings on lights water and sewerage.
The annual spring meeting of the Southwestern Montague County Singing Convention will draw 6000 to 7000 people to Bowie on Sunday March 26. George Brashear of Sunset will lead the 10 30 a m start as president. If weather allows loudspeakers may be placed outside City Auditorium for those without space inside. Lunch arrangements are being handled by the Bowie Chain of Commerce for out of county singers. The convention began in June 1892 and has run without interruption, listing a chronology of past presidents from W F Taylor to Jarney Whitehead and John Robertson.
City leaders and state and county officials met Monday to discuss a police short wave broadcasting station at Bowie. W. E. Benson chaired a study group to draft a formal FCC application while highway paving plans for Wise Street were reviewed and a county singing convention set for March 26.
