Major Carl Byas of Bowie defends his army rifle king title as 550 shooters compete in the rifle and pistol championship at Fort Benning Georgia. Bowie's National Guard leaves for two weeks summer camp at Port Hood near Waco.
Mr and Mrs C A Wilson returned Sunday from a 4600 mile trip visiting Richmond Washington DC Williamsburg and natural bridge Virginia and cities along the Smoky Mountains. They were accompanied by Mr and Mrs Thos J Leslie of Milford Texas who as Dallas Presbytery delegates joined Mr Wilson at the General Assembly in Richmond.
Five roping clubs from Bowie Fort Worth Olney Nocona and Healdton Okla join a parade to start at 4 p m before the fire hall for the Bowie volunteer fire department roping club parade trophies will go to the top two clubs about 40 contestants from Texas and Southern Oklahoma compete in calf roping saddle bronc bareback riding ladies barrel bull riding and steer wrestling performances June 24 and 25 at Pelham Park arena producer Roland Reed of Fort Worth will provide stock arena seating for 2000 and Veterans of Foreign Wars handle concessions. The parade and rodeo promise a large turnout with participation by business civic and social groups.
W A Brinkley of Sherman reports the death of his father H G Brinkley aged 78 in Sherman after a year of illness. The funeral is set for Friday at 2 30 p m at Barrett Funeral Home with burial in Hall Cemetery. The Brink Shoe Store will close all day Friday but reopen Saturday. The elder Brinkley was born in Arkansas and moved to Sherman in 1901. His wife Mrs Brinkley died in 1918. His home was 510 West Jones.
Mrs. Julian Bowman and Miss Ann traveled to El Reno and Oklahoma City on Friday for medical exams. Bowman plans to return to Bowie Friday and depart immediately for Houston where a specialist has been recommended for surgery.
Mr and Mrs G Griffin with Jan and Ligon departed Sunday for an extended eastern tour visiting Dr and Mrs R FE Cordes in Detroit Michigan.
Woody Campbell announces a week of special pictures and a favor for every patron to mark the Trail Drive-In fifth anniversary. The theater, built in 1950 on 20 acres along highway 81, has updated equipment including a larger Cinemascope screen and new playground facilities for children.

The Bowie Jaycees sponsor a Mystery Milk Shopper stunt during National Daily Month. A waitress who asks the key phrase What will you have milk? on the official day wins $15. The shopper will visit Bowie restaurants from a Friday through June 29 with a June 30 prize announcement by George Hoeldtke. If no waitress asks the phrase, the money goes to a Jaycee project.
Three polio cases are reported in Bowie with Mrs Cecil Walker 23 the most seriously ill. She was hospitalized after a bulbar poliomyelitis attack and is listed as satisfactory. Her brother Donald Partridge 14 had a mild attack and is out of danger. James Edgard Thompson also has polio with one leg paralyzed and is recovering at home.
Members of the Montague Farmers Co op will meet at Meyer Park tonight at 7 o clock for their annual meeting. Directors will be elected and patronage refunds made.
A truck driver described as asleep led Constable Hendrix on a pursuit Friday night. The empty semi forced two cars to pass on the wrong side before stopping on a dead end north of Bellevue. The driver, bound for Amarillo, claims sleepiness. trial set for next week.
Mr and Mrs Earl Sansom begin building a new two bedroom house on Lamb Street to be offered for sale. The project adds a fresh home in the neighborhood.
Mr. and Mrs. Marie Eggleston and their two sons and daughter from North Hollywood arrived Sunday to visit Errol Eggleton and wife at the Travel In Motel.
Commissioners Court publishes notice for a road bond election on Saturday July 9 with bonds totaling 425000 at 3 12 percent max to secure right of way for Highway 287 through the county excluding Bowie. State funds may widen from Bowie south to Wise county line. future bonds may cover from north Bowie to Clay county line. Six polling places named and a canvassing board of four members appointed.
Bowie Roping Club won first prize of 75 dollars in a parade at Duncan Oklahoma on Wednesday. Thirty members traveled for the event with other clubs from Duncan Healdton Temple Marlow Walters Chickasha and Burkburnett Oklahoma.
J H Spence district telephone company manager appeared before the city council to answer questions about operations as he sought a rate raise on May 23. Mayor Mark High named a committee to hear Spence's side, with Jack Slayden Thomas Evans and George Rucker on the panel.
The county school board met Saturday and approved transfers for 170 students mostly within the county. All but one family’s request was granted, denying six students from Gold-Burg who sought to move to Prairie Valley. Transfers listed by school include Montague Forestburg Lone Star Caps Corner Gold-Burg Nocona Prairie Valley Sunset Bowie with varying in and out counts.
Miss Edna Rice Cordell of Newport finished runner-up in a Wichita Falls beauty pageant connected to the Miss Texas and Miss America contests. The event, held Tuesday night by the Wichita Falls Jaycees, featured her talent performance singing The Man That Got Away. Cordell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Cordell and a Bowie High School graduate, sponsored by the Wichita Falls Optimist Club.
Mr and Mrs H I Trout returned Monday from Big Spring where they visited her parents and enjoyed a family reunion.
Bowie aims to build a lake dam and connecting pipeline for a new purification plant. Bids will open July 11 for the dam and for the pipe line, with alternates on pipe size and materials. The city also to install a 24 hour radio equipped police patrol and revise pay and duties.
Freese and Nichols says tree removal in lake beds is common but not universal. The taste of water may change when the city draws from the new lake. removal outside the main bed could hasten it. Final decision awaits bid totals and remaining lake bond funds, with a separate project funding if pursued.
