The Bowie Independent School District will conduct a on the site tax survey of all district property. The December 13 meeting approved a local staff led study to align valuations with actual market values and not raise tax rates. Permanent records will be kept at the school tax assessor's office for transparency.
The Bowie district school board approved a tax survey, reviewed East Ward wing costs at 41 538.40 excluding the architect fee, and noted cabinet deliveries. They voted to purchase one celestial trumpet for the band, set a textbook committee, approved 30 000 insurance for the new wing, funded a concrete driveway, and budget shrubbery and monthly bills.
Court records show trials in County Court with mixed outcomes. Cristo Morris of Newport faced a driving while intoxicated charge and a mis trial was declared after a witness offered inadmissible information. Edward Hutson of Wichita Falls was found guilty of DWI, fined, jailed briefly, and had his license suspended, with County Attorney Sutherland proving a contested point via tape. In County Court J A Holloway of Sunset pleads guilty to aggravated assault on Constable Shorty Hendrix. He apologizes and receives the minimum fine of 25 dollars plus costs totaling 55 dollars by Judge Howard Mays. Co Attorney Sutherland for the State and June Donald for the defendant.
Over ten days Bowie firefighters tackled fires at Evans Motor on a truck, a grass blaze on Sanders street, two December 16 fires in Adkins street trash and Tom Nichols car wiring, a heavy fire at 309 Elba street apartment owned by W C Jones, and a 1 am baggage car fire in the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad in Alvord caused by wiring requiring chemicals.
The Bowie School Board held a noon meeting on Tuesday December 20 and voted to extend the holidays by one day. Classes will resume Tuesday January 3 1956 at the regular time.
Miss Gail Wood a sophomore at the University of Arkansas has been chosen as Honorary Colonel of the Army ROTC unit. As colonel she commands a five member Honorary Wing Staff and leads four battalions. She was selected by unit vote and presented in drill week. She will be presented at the Military Ball in spring. She is daughter of Mrs Irene Wood of Bowie and a member of Kap Kap Gamma Tau Beta Sigma and Orchesis.
Mrs J H Anna Moore 82 resident of Montague county since 1924 died Sunday night at Bowie hospital She was born July 12 1873 in Palaska Tennessee Funeral services were held at Sunset Baptist Church Interment Smyrna cemetery Survivors include her husband two daughters Minnie Walker Ruby Rider one son I W Moore two sisters one brother 11 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren
The city of Bowie announces a prohibition on fireworks with enforcement leading to prosecution. Mayor Mark High signs the notice, clarifying the law and penalties in effect from mid month.
Rev. Fred Brewton of Waco accepts call from First Presbyterian Bowie congrega tion. He plans to move next week and will preach his first sermon Sunday January 1. Brewton, in his mid thirties, with Mrs Brewton and four sons, comes from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waco and filled the pulpit here last Sunday.
A capacity Sunday audience praised the Messiah presented at First Methodist Church. The performance drew strong applause as the choir directed by Jim Harmon, the church's minister of music, led the program.
The Lions Club and Judge Roy Bean fund drive raised 834.24 for distributing to the less fortunate. Donations ranged from five cents to ten dollars with major gifts from Gary Nees Lumber Co. and Woodman Camp of Bowie. Baskets for the needy will be packed at Service Pipe Line Co and handed out Christmas Eve by Boy Scouts and Lions members.
Judges spent two evenings judging 150 decorated Bowie homes in four divisions sponsored by the Bowie Art League. Winners include Santa Claus arrangements led by Lynn Garlington at 510 West Pecan and religious displays at 207 East Pecan.
A noon Rotary program included solos by Jim Harmon and piano pieces by Mrs. Harmon. Elizabeth Young arranged the program. Guests included LaGrande Henderson of Wichita Falls and Melvin Tucker.
Bowie shops stay open late to meet the rush of Christmas buyers with ample merchandise and gifts still available for remaining lists.
Stephens Furniture store captured first prize in the best decorated store window contest conducted by the Business and Professional Women's club. Parrish's placed second with honorable mention to the Travel-In Motel, Goodwins and First National Bank.

A Bowie hospital treated three Bowie high school boys after a rollover on Vashti road with Ed Gililland staying for several days. Other incidents included a red light collision at Mason and Tarrant, a off-road spin on Stoneburg Bellevue highway, and a city light pole damage from a failed stop at the Y.
A truck driver escaped injury in a crash with Hale Bros Drilling Co. equipment. A Bonita woman suffered serious injuries after a rollover near Bowie as drivers face holiday traffic enforcement. City police report fines totaling 140 dollars for drunken and traffic violations amid a statewide safety push.
Five Bowie Chamber of Commerce members attended the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce annual banquet last Thursday evening. Attendees were Mark High, Roy Slaughter, W. C. Buchanan, Roy D. Slaughter Jr., and Bob Posey.
Post office windows will close at noon on Saturday. Delivery of Christmas parcels is planned in town on Sunday.
The News office will be closed all day Saturday to grant the staff a longer Christmas holiday.
M Johnson is recovering satisfactorily after surgery at Bowie hospital and doctors expect him to go home for Christmas. A Carter memorial committee meeting postponed by bad weather and Johnsons operation has not been held since.
