Bowie News items show the post office handles 125000 to 150000 Christmas cards yearly while speeding cases rise with radar cited by Justice Williams. Jottings recount local events including residents, migrations, military service, and fires at Smythe street in 1951.
Bowie merchants announce extended hours with stores to remain open every night next week to serve Christmas shoppers. The Chamber of Commerce fixes 1956 holidays with closures on New Years, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Stores close Monday December 26 and Monday January 2 due to holidays on Sundays.
The Bowie Art League and B P W club announce home and business window judging for December 19 and 20. Prizes include $5 and $2.50 for winners in each category.
Bowie post office will be open Saturday afternoon with regular hours to handle Christmas mailings. The window will close at the usual midweek time of 5 30.
Montague County will furnish quarters for female jurors per Sheriff Lindsey and Judge Holland. The court house north side rooms off the district court room will house a lounge sleeping quarters and a shower to care for comforts and convenience of women jurors under the new state law.
The Rotary club hosts a Christmas party this Thursday at Morrow's Coffee Shop starting at seven o'clock. Wives of Rotarians will be guests.
Open meeting of the Chamber of Commerce road committee discussed drafting a counter-proposal to the State Highway Commission for an expressway from Clay to Wise counties. Four men were named to collaborate and another meeting will be held soon. County work on Farm-to-Market roads and road projects across precincts were outlined, including Rock Hill road surfacing and right-of-way plans.
The American Legion will host a Christmas party on Monday December 19 in the Lions Hall. All veterans are invited to attend.
The 50 voice augmented chancel choir, under Jim Harmon, will perform The Messiah at First Methodist Church Sunday at 5 PM. Accompanists Nelda Merrette and Jim Harmon, with soloists Jeanne Brisco, Jon Vorisek, Robert Newell, Mrs. Glenn Cunningham and Roger Cole, hail from Dallas and Bowie. Reverend Warren McSwain invites the public.
Mrs Roy F Broom announces the opening of Dorthy’s Beauty Shop at 1101 Matthews Street Bowie. Owner Mrs Broom with beautician Estelle Sawyer. Broom, formerly Dorthy Nored, is a Bowie resident and S & S Motor employee.
Mrs. Sawyer a Fort Worth born beautician now resides in Bowie with her construction worker husband by Bowie Lake. They have a nine year old son and plan a family life centered around local Bowie community.
Parker's Food Store closed at 1 p.m. so staff could attend the annual Christmas Bonus Party in Wichita Falls at 6 p.m. in the Women's Forum Building.

Bowie Lions Club seeks clothing food and toys for Christmas baskets to aid the needy. Donations can be arranged through Lions members or Scout and Service Pipeline offices. Baskets packed December 22 at Service Pipeline and delivered December 24 with Judge Roy Bean court fundraiser events.
The city council authorized contracts for a new water purification plant and pumping equipment while moving to clear trees from the lake bed. Bids were adjusted from 144 900 to 134 310 for the plant and 5 290 72 for two raw water pumps. Fairbanks Morse won a horizontal unit at 2 410. County dozer crews and a private contractor assisted with tree removal at 8 and 10 per hour respectively, and the trees will be burned before dam opening.
Mon ta gue County Hereford Breeders staged their annual Bowies Pelham Park sale with 24 bulls selling for 6167.50 an average of 256.98 and 17 cows for 3050 averaging 179.41. Champion bull went to Tucker Hereford Farms Bowie for 500. reserve to Hull Dobbs Ranch Fort Worth for 510. Champion female to Benson Brothers Bowie for 250. reserve to L. C. Atkinson Throckmorton for 225. Attendance and interest rose over prior sales with higher averages.
A former Forestburg resident, Henry LaRue Jones, 33, died December 10 on the Kermit highway near Odessa when a borrowed car driven by a teenage girl turned in front of his vehicle. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church in Forestburg with interment at Perryman Cemetery. Jones is survived by his wife Mary Inez Jones, mother Willie Jones, two sisters Dean Martin and Tub Whitley, and five brothers Casey, Ben, Cecil, Howard, and I. M. The Odessa American report noted three teen girls and Jones died in the crash, with two girls and the man dead on arrival and one girl dying on the operating table. The girls were 16, 17, and 19. The crash occurred when the girls’ car collided with Jones’s vehicle.
Montague county joined the nation in voting for cotton quotas Tuesday. Seventy four cotton farmers voted with seventy in favor and four against yielding a 94.5 percent approval. Texas overall voted 92 percent in favor.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals unanimously upholds Judge Howard Mays in Roy Bell drunken driving case. Bell guilty. punishment three days in jail, a $50 fine, six month license suspension. High court rejects pretrial suppression of Bell’s prior conviction evidence.
Postmaster Horace predicts a record pre holiday season as his office notes a growing flood of Christmas cards and gift parcels. He cites 142,054 outgoing items in December last year and reports 47,000 cards and letters already sent as the rush begins. He adds that the peak period is approaching.
W H Lancaster a Bowie water department employee, was elected fire chief succeeding Alvin Baccus who led the department for 25 years. Lancaster has served as assistant chief since 1936 and other officers were chosen Fay Cantwell as Assistant Chief and Alex Griffin as Second Assistant.
The city council Monday night accepted a new residential addition presented by landowner C. V. Young. The plat covers one full block with a half block on each side, totaling 28 lots averaging 70 feet in width, located east of Bow ie and near the Virgil Brown residence.
Crews lay the lake to plant line with progress on the Wheeler property. The ditcher crossed De catur street and will reach the highway soon. Casing for the pipe under the Rock Island rail bed is in place. Cement tower for the pump house is finished and forms for the bridge to the bluff are installed.
Bowie boys meet Springtown in the Denton tourney at 5 PM Friday for their last game before holidays. The boys B team heads to Saint Jo tournament Friday and Saturday, while Cottontails face Slidell Friday night. The girls have no games until after the break, with an invitational at Decatur January 6-7.

Bids opened at the city meeting for a windmill and about 80 feet of pipe. Fred Salmon of Nocona submitted the high bid of 86 dollars. Other bids came from R. L. Cowley 36.50, E. H. Cunningham 51.25, Thos. Lee 35, Geo. Curlee 61.25.
The city collected its first oil royalty from a well drilled on city property at the old lake site. The payment totaled 1231.81 dollars and covered three months of oil income.
A resolution praising Alvin Baccus for 38 years of service as Bowie Fire Chief was passed unanimously by the Bowie City Council on Monday night. The document acknowledging his work will appear elsewhere in the issue.
Mayor High told Bowie council Monday night the fire hazard threatening higher fire insurance rates has been corrected and the premises are ready for a re inspection.
City council voted a regular Christmas bonus equal to ten percent of one month’s salary for city employees at Monday night’s meeting.
City Superintendent Robbins is authorized to buy 1500 feet of six inch cast iron water pipe for extensions and replacements, enabling ongoing municipal water infrastructure work.
