Local crews restart work at Big Sandy Lake on Monday morning after a weather stoppage last week. Sheriff Tom Lindsey warns merchants to watch for bad check writers during December as shoppers are distracted.
Eight teams enter a girls basketball invitational in Bowie with games scheduled Thursday through Saturday. Santa Claus will land by helicopter on December 15 in the business district on Tarrant Street at 3 PM, with a Christmas tree and candy for children. The event promises a large crowd and festive decorations by the Bowie Chamber and Jaycees.
Fort Worth hosts a busy basketball week with Arlington Heights visiting Tuesday. The schedule lists an invitational tournament Thursday through Saturday at the home venue and Brewer of Fort Worth playing Monday at Bowie.
The Bowie basketball girls won the Denton tournament with two overtime wins. In the semi final Bowie beat Northwest 59 to 56 after a 56 all tie. The final against Wylie ended 63 63 and Bowie won 67 65 in overtime. Linda Campbell earned all tournament honors.
An open Bow ie Chamber of Commerce highway committee meeting will be held at the C of C office Tuesday night at 7 30. Thos Ayres, chairman, invites anyone interested in highway problems to attend as the State Highway Commission pressures local authorities on changing and widening highway 287 through Bowie and the county.
A 300 foot micro-wave tower will rise on Continental land at their district headquarters in Bowie to provide two way telephone service for Sinclair and Continental. Similar towers will span from Northern Oklahoma to Houston and west to New Mexico as joint construction begins. A concrete building for equipment and base foundations with dead men for guy wires are in place. operation is expected soon after the first of the year.
A. B. Jolley of KRLD Dallas delivered the keynote as Montague county farmers received agricultural achievement awards at Singers Hall Montague. County Judge Howard W. Mays presided as master of ceremonies at the event.
The Bowie boys A and B basketball teams beat Arlington Heights 66 to 55 and 60 to 46 at the Bowie gym on Tuesday. Individual scorers for the A game were Higgs 20 Carver 11 Gerron 12 Robicheaux 6 Dyer 9 Cox 2 Hawkins 0 Thompson 6 Winn 0. The B game featured Raleigh 28 Davis 8 Stephens 8 Roland 6 Green 2 McShan 2 Cornelison 6. Next Tuesday the A team plays Arlington Heights in the new Farrington Field house and the B team at Arlington Heights gym.

The Midwestern University Concert Band with about 60 members will give a Christmas program at Bowie High School auditorium on Thursday morning December 15 at 10 30. The concert lasts about an hour and features religious and popular carols. Admission is free. Louis Hardeman and Carroll Winn, former Bowie High School band members, are in the ensemble.
Louis Andersen known as Andy, long-time Wilbarger street grocer, buys stock and equipment of the Conoco station at West Wise and Hulme from Newton Whitehead. Raised in Pernell Oklahoma, he and wife Gena Graves of Elmore City reside at 207 Washington with two sons. Former Abilene oil field worker, he retains Jack Richardson and Dwight Whitaker as attendants.
Bowie city council approved plans for a purification plant to handle 1% million gallons daily after bids exceeded expectations due to a pipeline change. Henderson Granite Co resumes production after a November fire. a new all steel building 33 by 150 by 23 feet rises beside the old site, with 20 ton hoist and expanded facilities underway.
The G. O. Slaughter residence on FE Wise is undergoing full interior redecorating. During the work, Mrs. Slaughter resides with Lawrence Foresters.
Mr and Mrs Barney Whitehead moved to Postoak yesterday after purchasing the C A Schroufe grocery and building. They added three rooms and a bath to the store building. Mr Whitehead, who previously ran Bowie city offices for 20 years, has 15 years in wholesale groceries and expects to manage groceries with current price changes.
Dr C J Dodsworth left Sunday to attend the Texas Grand Lodge convention in Waco. Dr B B Evans Carl Russell R B Fulcher and Ernest Chandler also departed this morning to attend the meetings and expect to return Friday evening.
Construction on the residence of Dr and Mrs Berry N Squyres on Coffield Street in the Harris addition has started, marking the commencement of work on the dwelling.
The 50 voice augmented Chancel Choir of First Methodist Church will perform Handel's Messiah on Sunday, December 18 at 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary, a first for Bowie. Conductor Jim Harmon leads. Nelda Mertte and Jim Harmon assist as accompanists. Soloists Jean ne Brisco, Jon Vorisek, Robert Newell, Joyce Cunningham, and Roger Cole participate.
Montague County Hereford Breeders Assoc. stages the third annual Hereford sale at Pelham Park Bowie on December 14 starting at 1 pm. Col Walter S Britton of College Station serves as auctioneer and Bill Mitchell of Keith Hereford Ranch judges cattle beginning at 10 am.

Clyde Trout purchased the equipment and stock of the Humble station at West Wise and Smythe streets from Wender Reeder. Discharged in December 1946, Trout had managed the station for eight years and now leases the building from Humble while Reeder retains ownership. Lt. Col. Reeder is stationed at Carswell air base near Fort Worth.
Maria A., six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Terry, was struck by a car driven by Mrs. T. A. Morris on the Belcherville road Sunday afternoon. She received a concussion and head lacerations requiring six stitches and remained in Bowie hospital into Tuesday.
