Bowie grocery stores adopt Sunday closing policy

Grocery stores in Bowie agree to close one Sunday each week starting December 12 to give clerks a regular day of rest. The changes keep stores open until 9:00 PM on weekdays December 22 23 and 24 and until 9:00 AM on Christmas Day with normal hours resuming Monday December 28.

Hoax Copy of Medieval Latin Inscription in London

Editor reacts to a hoax letter claiming to have found an ancient Latin inscription from Queen Victoria Street excavations. The note references a Saxon saint missionary Uncatus Ambulans and asks for a translation to publish for antiquarian readers.

Red Cross Roll Call in Bowie Sets Record High

The Red Cross annual roll call in Bowie shows 184 members, up nine from 1936, the best enrollment to date. It lists many 100 percent markers and names numerous donors and volunteers led by J. R. Gaddy and Mrs. Angove with Mrs. Galladay coordinating efforts. If any name is missing or an error is found, notify a worker.

Highway line marker erected near Red River

The Texas State Highway Dept erected a five foot high rock marker near Red River bridge on Highway 2. It forms a map of Texas with the world Texas in the center. M. O. Robinson laid the stone. R. O. Plumer supervised the project in Division 5 covering Montague to Clay counties.

Post Office Urges Early Mailing of Gift Packages

Bowie Postmaster W F Robinson urges early mailing of Christmas packages to help the Post Office handle holiday volume and ensure delivery by Christmas. Late mailings should use special delivery stamps to guarantee delivery even on Christmas Day.

Donald Mann Named Director of Chamber of Commerce

At the C of C meeting Donald Mann was elected to fill the vacancy left by J W Chancellor. Plans discussed aim to secure right of way from Bowie to Montague with five miles out from Montague. All deeds secured except one and if filmed by the next meeting a Dec 20 celebration dinner may be held for directors highway engineers commissioners and the county judge.

J. S. Sheffield Pioneer Bowie Citizen Buried in Elmwood

Funeral services for J. S. Sheffield lifelong Bowie resident since 1892 were held Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home with Rev. Geo F. Kornegay officiating. Burial followed beside his wife in Elmwood Cemetery. He was born June 23, 1868 in Thomasville Georgia and died Sunday morning found in bed. Survivors include son Otis Sheffield of Oklahoma City and sister Mrs E A Bailey of Corsicana, with several cousins named.

Bowie Fire Dept last Monday night elected A C Baccus as Chief W H Lancaster as 1st Asst Chief B P Whitehead as 2nd Asst Chief Leslie L Speir as Secy Treas Plans were set for the Christmas Dance and a program for Fort Worth Fire Dept visitors on Dec 15. Bowie stores will all be closed Christmas Day according to Ned Horton manager of the Retail Merchants Association. Grocery stores will open briefly Christmas morning then close at 9 00 a m.

NYA Work In Montague County Beautifies Highway Park

Five youths assigned to NYA Work cleaned brush along the road side park on Highway 5 between Ringgold and Nocona. Preparations are under way to build tables and benches at Lions Club Park near the intersection of Highways 50 and 2. Circular drives will be finished, more benches and tables added, and trees planted later in the season. Work is directed by R. O. Plummer, state highway department section foreman.

NYA Head Explains Youth Movement in Montague County

H A Ziegler assistant District Supervisor of Fort Worth toured Montague County Monday inspecting NYA Highway beautification project and related clerical programs. J C Kellam Dallas Youth Director described NYA efforts to bridge school to work with part time schooling and work projects for needy youth and expanded training. The Red Cross First Aid School at the Fire Station, led by R O Plummer with the Fire Department, has ended with exam grading pending and completion lists to be announced.

S. W. Montague Singing Convention to Meet

The Southwest Montague County Singing Convention will meet in an 11 day session starting Sunday December 19 at Leona. President Doc Jackson will preside and a large crowd is expected from surrounding counties. Barney Whitehead Ike and Henry Parks lead the program committee and details will appear next week in The Bowie News.

J T Ashton of Montague is con valescing from pneumonia after admission last Thursday. Dr F M Patton of Henrietta visited Bowie on Tuesday and formerly resided here. Mrs C H Pace expects to return home soon after treatment. Mrs L Reeves of near Pleasant Ridge returned home Monday after hospital stay. F E Cordell, who had major surgery on Nov 29, was dismissed from the hospital Wednesday morning.

Mary Jo Watson was crowned Football Queen in an elaborate Tuesday night ceremony at the school auditorium. Roland Hachtel placed the crown. she wore a white gown with a lauce jacket, a gold satin train, and rhinestones.

Interscholastic League Meets on Montague Basketball Tournament

Executive committee of the Interscholastic League met in Montague to set a Montague county basketball championship. A tournament will be held in Nocona the weekends of February 4-5 and 10-11 with entries due January 25 and drawings January 29 at 10 am. Martin Speaks to Rotary on Bowie School System

Dan L. Martin gave a classification talk to the Rotary Club at Morrow Grill Room detailing the Bowie school system and duties of a superintendent. Rev. George F. Kornegay delivered the invocation while Barney Whites led Rotary songs with Melba Culp at the piano. A Christmas party is planned for Wednesday night December 22 with By Anns as guests. Ty Coffield and J. Lee Hanchey named chairs for the aero gram and arrangements.
