The Rotary Club sponsors a five year Christmas lights display in Bowie. This year 60 streamers cover about three quarters of a mile on Main Street, using 30 watt bulbs. Volunteers from the city install and remove the lights, with Warren J. Lee Hanchey Whitman and Joe Spew leading the committee.

The First Baptist Church Business Men's Bible Class plans its regular monthly meeting at 7:30 pm. The main feature is an oyster supper served by the losing side of a recent attendance contest between the Blues and Reds. Musical numbers and readings accompany the program with D M Meir as principal speaker and T B Coffield as toastmaster.
A fragmented 18th century sketch notes the death of Joe Miller and the widow’s legacy. Publisher T Read hires John Mottley to compile a collection titled Miller's Jests, or the Wits Mecum, and the book spawns a lasting craze of Joe Miller jokes among London readers.
Bowie Scouts led by Henry M. Moore attended a four day encampment at Worth Ranch near Palo Pinto over Thanksgiving weekend. They met sister Fort Worth Troop 32 and Fort Worth Troop 42, received instruction in Scout work, and enjoyed hikes boat trips and games. Bowie participants included Jim Harris Selwyn Willis Coburn Hill Leon Randell Wayne Whitehead Sam Ash McLemore John Yarbrough David Gregory and H M Moore.
Harry Moore shows improvement and expects to return home after an accident on the highway work. Eldrid Cordell of Newport underwent a major operation Monday morning and is doing nicely. W. E. Copeland from Shannon remains under treatment at the hospital.
Records from the Fort Worth WPA office show Texas has disbursed 12,327,221 on Works Progress Administration projects over two years across 21 counties. Montague County used 190,432 in WPA funds for roads and streets, with 101,320 from sponsors, while local subdivisions contributed 2,696,933 and the federal government 9,630,287. The distribution depends on certified workers and sponsor funds.
Bowie Lions Club prepares its annual Christmas tree to bring joy to 200 to 300 children. They request donations of old toys and dolls at the Radio Service Shop and have placed 44 milk bottles around town for free will gifts to help fund the effort.
Mr and Mrs Carl Gadberry welcomed a son on Thanksgiving day weighing eight pounds The baby was named Ronnie Leslie and joins the family with joy and celebration.
Ned Horton was chosen as secretary to succeed E L Anderson at the Montague county chamber of commerce meeting Tuesday night. Horton, known for leading Good Will Tours and serving as Retail Merchants Association manager, also served as a World War I captain and major in France.
Mr and Mrs Carroll Green and daughter Mary Lou joined friends Mr and Mrs Chas Cooper in Fort Worth for a joint double anniversary dinner marking fifteen years since their marriages The Greens and Coopers have celebrated each anniversary together Mrs M A Bryan and three girls visited Bridgeport on Saturday as guests of Mrs Frank Hardcastle Mr and Mrs Paul Donald traveled to Wichita Falls on Wednesday.
Dr. E. W. Wright will attend the regular quarterly meeting of the State Board of Health in Austin on Monday. Afterward he joins a hunting party at King Ranch near Kingsville for the rest of the week, with Dr. E. E. Miller Sr. of the Public Health Service, Dr. Geo W. Cox State Health Officer, and Dr. Hubert Jackson of San Antonio.
Mrs. G. L. Jones and her daughter Miss Vaudeen visited Bridgeport residents Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jones for a weekend gathering.
The regular Community Singing will be held Sunday December 5 at 2 30 p m at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Barney P Whitehead president will preside and direct the singing featuring class songs and congregational singing. The public is invited.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Willett visited from Friday until Monday with Mr and Mrs Bob White in Henrietta. Monday the party spent the day in Wichita Falls.
Miss Frances Clark and Mrs. Marvin Willett travel to Decatur to visit Mrs. R. H. Hollaman and her newborn daughter. Hollaman formerly lived in Bowie.
Mrs. E. D. Dunham and her son Edwin Ray of Wichita Falls spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Kearby Jr.
J B Green Old Age Assistance Commissioner met with the News office and announced a revised travel plan. He will be in Henrietta on Wednesdays and begin December 10 visiting Nocona every other Friday morning and Montague the same Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Lora McDonald, Mrs. J. P. Kearby Jr., Miss Artie Hurdt, and Miss Alice McDonald were in Wichita Falls for a Friday visit, joining local acquaintances for a social event.
Mrs. R. G. Barksdale, formerly Miss Dorothy Latham, visits her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Latham. Mr. Barksdale is in South Texas on business.
Mrs. F. J. Dixon and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Brandt visited Wichita Falls on Tuesday, stopping to see local friends and attractions during their trip.
The Department of Commerce Bureau of the Census notes Montague County ginned 1,853 more bales before November 14 from the 1987 crop than before November 14, 1936. The 1937 crop totals 5,002 bales ginned by that date.
M. L. Morrow spent the week end with Mrs. Morrow, returning to the Stovall Wells Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Alec Shirley visited Mrs. Shirley's parents Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Hendricks on Sunday in Saint Jo.
Rev. George F. Kornegay attended the Methodist Pastors Conference held in Denton on Tuesday with other clergy.
Mrs G M Dickey who underwent a major operation in Wichita Falls is reported to be doing very nicely and improving steadily according to latest hospital bulletin.
Mr and Mrs W N Roberts and Mrs Dixon of Neches are guests of Mr and Mrs Astor in Lawton Oklahoma. Mrs Aston is daughter of Mr and Mrs Roberts and mother of Mrs Dixon.
Funeral services for 8 J Doc Hipp were held in Sunset with burial in Sunset Cemetery. He died after a 70 foot fall from a Wink Texas oil derrick. He was 83 and survived by his wife, one son Billy James of Wink, five brothers, five sisters, and his father S H Hipp of Sunset.
Montague county farmers and ranchers are called to election meetings across communities to choose community committeemen for the 1988 Agricultural Conservation Program. Eligible voters include 1987 and 1938 co operators, with sign ups and specific eligibility rules outlined by F P Martin and E C Jameson. Meetings include Mallard Saint Jo Prairie Point Ringgold and Bowie on December 8 to 10 with designated times and precincts.
Dan Lee Martin earned a spot on District 12-B honor teams for 1937. Coaches voted him to the first team as left guard and to the second team as fullback. Gray secured a left guard position on the second team.
Mrs Reese Wysong and her young son Joe depart Sunday for Indianapolis after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs M Johnson. Mr and Mrs Johnson and Mrs Sam Lovett accompany them as far as Fort Worth.
Rotary Club hosted Bowie High School football team at a turkey banquet. Guest speaker Dutch Meyer, famed TCU coach, urged teamwork and business life readiness. Also present were local officials and football staff including Lennon Hill and Reynolds.
E. W. Daley W. W. Boyer N. B. Gary D. M. Major and Ek L. Anderson attended the opening of Kraft Phoenix Cheese Co Southwestern Division headquarters in the renovated Petroleum building Denison. The basement houses a gym swimming pool and lockers while the first floor serves 450 employees and the second floor houses offices. Representatives from nearly every large cheese plant in the United States joined the ceremony.
The Woman's Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church plans a Christmas dinner for Buckner Orphans Home children. They seek 125 hens or turkeys donated by Dec 7 before 5 pm at Morgan & Hills. The birds will be shipped that hour. Committee: Mrs. Walter Coffield Benevolent Chairman and others named.
Clifford Wagner son of M B Wagner employed with the Rock Island Railroad in Bowie was elected into membership of Pi Epsilon honorary petroleum engineering fraternity at the State University where he studies. Selection based on top 25 percent of juniors and seniors. other undergraduates chosen by local chapter. Clifford, a local high school graduate, was popular among classmates.
Bowie resident B R Giles, a longtime grocer since 1914, announces plans to run for County Clerk this spring and will make a formal declaration after the new year. He took over his father’s store after his death and has been a county figure since 1895.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ferguson and daughter Marjorie Lareen of Tyler were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Dan L. Martin. Mrs. Ferguson and daughter remained for an extended visit.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jesa Lovelady 75 who died Wednesday November 24 from burns were held November 25 at Chief Christ Church. Interment followed at Hopewell Cemetery with out of town relatives and friends attending from Pri Vas Worth Bellevue Austin Saint Jo Lelia Lake and other areas.
Golden Glove boxing preparatory bouts set for Wichita Falls on December 6 and 20 as warm ups for January finals. Winners receive a watch charm medal and all expenses paid to Fort Worth for the state event. state winners go to Chicago for the national championship. Jim Wakefield is district sponsor. boys must send name age weight and experience to him and supply own gear except gloves provided by sponsor.
Glenn Trout enjoys radioing foreign stations with his son Robert. On Robert's eighth birthday the family heard his name on DJD Berlin at ten PM and the announcer sent birthday wishes and a cake question. Mr. Trout's letters from abroad are on display at the Radio Service Shop.
