A Bowie traveler complained the steak order at a local cafe cost $1.75 and faced a collect call from Amarillo. The owner disputes high prices while noting similar costs in Chicago and another city, suggesting Bowie offers better value despite occasional high charges.
The district Draft Board for Montague Clay and Wise counties met in Bowie and will open an office August 30 in the City Auditorium basement. B E Watson of Bowie named chairman O L Graves of Henrietta secretary E F Hornbeck of Decatur served on the board. They may appoint a full time clerk and provide temporary registration quarters in several communities across the counties.
E L White announces operation of a new garage in the Willett and Walker Motor Company building at No 2 East Wise Street. He brings long experience and modern equipment to service De Soto Plymouth and all other makes. his brother Si White runs a magneto and electric service at the same location.
Patricia Elwanda Pittman daughter of E L Pittman and wife, Carolyn Sue Skaggs daughter of George Skaggs, and Joyce Maurine Hickman daughter of C H Hickman born August 4. Granddaughters include W H Hickman and A W Foster, with nocona hospital adds Dannie Selwyn Willis born August 6 to Selwyn Willis family at Major's Hospital.
Mr and Mrs Glynne Griffin and Mr and Mrs Butch Quisenberry travel to Yellowstone National Park and other western scenic spots for a vacation trip.
At the close of the week’s revival First Baptist Bowie raised more than 3500 for the Bowie South Side Mission and Forestburg church. Subscriptions came from the audience and the South side lot title work proceeds. About 5000 more is planned for Forestburg as revival continues with 70 additions. Rev G B Bradshaw preached. Rev W G Burton covers in his absence.
Caroll Bowden, a longtime local automotive mechanic, opens his own garage in new quarters built by Sullivan Brothers on West Tarrant Street. He promises prompt service and has modern equipment.
Mr and Mrs Mark High return from an extended vacation through Eastern states including New York City where they attended Lions International Convention He served as delegation from Bowie Lions Club They drove over 4000 miles and saw most major league teams in action both leagues with the goal of watching the big baseball clubs in play
R. R. Walker becomes a clerk at Wood Dry Goods Store. He transfers to Bowie from Gainesville where he spent years with a large clothing establishment.
A hospital notice records patients admitted including Mrs. C. R. Fant Henrietta Mrs. Deane Cain Bowie George H. Williams Sunset John Edwards Bowie Mrs. H. McDonald Bowie and others. Discharges include Mrs. Pittman and infant Patricia Elwanda Nathan Clark George Williams John Edwards Mrs. Shaw and several others.
Mr and Mrs Bettis Coffield and daughter Kay and Mr and Mrs Walter Scott and daughter of Saint Jo are spending a vacation in Colorado Springs Colorado.
The Gainesville Community Circus sponsored by the Bowie Lions Club drew large crowds at the East Ward school campus venue. Gates open at 6 30 p m with a 8 p m show Friday following a Thursday performance praised for its three ring program and versatile local performers. Proceeds support the Bowie Lions Club community betterment fund.
Oil activity centers on the Chico area as a new Sun Set to Chico road opens and pay depths rise. Continental reports no active drilling in the field for the period, having completed Heard D 1 near Vashti. Two new wells, Barnett 1 in the Lewis pool and Mrs E Wrinkle 1 offset to Minor Discovery near Montague, await rigs.
Workmen are busy this week on extensive interior improvements in the Wood Dry Goods building. The scope includes a Celo-Tex ceiling improved cooling and lighting new paint and other updates. Carpenters Charles Oliver B Brown and G T Brown supervise the work.
One heat exhaustion case, that of E F Bradfield, was brought to Bowie Hospital Monday. Bradfield works for the Continental Oil Company. The day before the high reading of 1106 recorded here this year, the exam noted the rising heat.
Wanda Scheller two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Amil Scheller from Bowie was rushed to a Fort Worth specialist Thursday morning after swallowing an open safety pin. Emergency care was given at Bowie's Clinic.
Alton Garner C of C manager returned from College Station with A L Allison carrying fruits from the Fruit Experiment Farm at Montague for processing experiments at A&M College labs. A collection of jellies jams and preserves is on exhibit for public viewing.
Samuel T. Smith, 60, a long-time resident living alone on G. P. White's ranch five miles west of Bowie, was found dead about 8 p.m. August 5, likely since the morning. White searched after noticing no milk from his cow. An inquest by Bert Lancaster, Justice of the Peace, returned a verdict of death from natural causes. Funeral services were held in Guymon, Oklahoma, with Owens-Brumley Funeral Home transporting the body.
Bowie high school prepares for a 1930s style season with non conference games at Olney Electra and Arlington starting September 17. The Jackrabbits travel to Decatur Jacksboro Henrietta Newcastle and Nocona with one home game against Wichita Falls Rowdies on November 11. Coach Mattingly leads 37 players to Craverville camp for two weeks of training amid a rebuilding year with few returning lettermen.
Bethlehem Supply Company vacates Mason Street brick building beside the Post Office and relocates stock and equipment to Cisco where a new house opens. C A Ritchey and C A Pigg depart to Cisco. The former building is leased to Bowie Butane Gas Company occupying the Stephens building near the Post Office, with Herschel Stephens planning a furniture business at the prior location.
The Post Office grants 14 block city delivery in Bowie starting August 18 1948 on a one trip daily basis contingent on houses having numbers matching a new city map. Residents must provide lot and block numbers and confirm addresses while awaiting updated street names and new mailboxes.
Voters from Leona, Lindale, and Bowie districts petitioned the County Judge for consolidation on September 1, 1948. The Bowie election will be at the City Auditorium with handlers J B Summers J B McIntyre and D M Major. A large gas line break near Bowie prompted rapid mobilization from Lone Star Gas Company crews from Decatur Bridgeport Fort Worth and others to repair by 1 45 pm and ensure safety without accidents.
The Municipal Concert Association advances its membership drive from August 23 to 28. Memberships, transferable, replace tickets for the season as more than one outstanding artist in vocal, piano, and violin is planned. A Mt. Pleasant success story supports the Bowie plan.
Tip Jimerson and son Tip Jr open Tip's Milk Bar No 2 near the east city limits on Fort Worth Highway. The modern rock building is air conditioned with leather seats and neon signs. Tip Jr named manager. menu features sandwiches cold plates salads milk drinks and ice cream.
Bowie Rodeo Club head E G Wood announces another thrilling rodeo program for Saturday night August 14. He promises wilder stock and a real thriller in prospect for the event at the Bowie arena.
Fred Raborn Jr travels to Bakersfield California to attend a well known sales school for a month's special training.
Charles Henning returned from Wichita Falls where he attended an Order of the Arrow event, a National Brotherhood of Boy Scout honor campers gathering. He becomes Bowie’s first Arrow member to earn the second degree and plans to return to college in September to study for a professional scouting career.
