In Bowie a new pump system boosts lake water supply to the stand pipe. Local business booster notes show windows and ads drive traffic while real estate and cattle markets offer healthy activity. A UT scientist warns teachers about five year nuclear threat and global danger.
One of the area's largest furniture shipments in years was placed at H. F. Brooks Furniture Store next to the bank this week. The stock features bedroom suites in limed oak, pecan and walnut veneers with solid pecan pieces touted for durability and superb finish.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dunbar of Wichita Falls were guests Sunday of the Wetsels and the Glenn Trouts.
Bowie schools will open Tuesday September 7, the day after Labor Day. Many teachers are expected back soon after summer vacations and several graduates from last spring will leave for college in various southwest towns.
Mr and Mrs C S Henderson are enjoying a summer trip through Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan they have been away three weeks and expect to return in two weeks
County and city officials in Bowie conducted multiple stings on minor infractions. Fourteen men charged with gaming were fined $12 each after raids on a second floor dice game. A second raid yielded another fourteen fines, while two Bowie youths faced penalties for street racing. Hot-check writ ing and D W I cases have risen, prompting warnings to merchants.
Miss Norma Jean Wells joins the Central Tire and Supply Store under manager Jack Lovette. Wells is well known locally and brings sales experience to the shop.
The News photo shows J. L. Holman by his truck with a haul of new Bowie street markers ready for delivery. Work began this week under the Chamber of Commerce civic committee with Alton Garner on site, digging holes and setting posts in the North Ward as 205 markers are installed to meet a city council funded need.
Funeral services and reinterment for Pfc. Charles Willis Heard age 21 will be held at First Methodist Church Bowie Sunday at 4 PM. Rev. J. C. Mann and Rev. Kirk Beard preside with Owens Brumley in charge of the burial. Heard, a Bowie High School graduate and Texas Tech student, died in France January 12 1945 while serving with the 410th Infantry 103rd Division. He was buried in Epinal France and later moved to Bowie area for interment.
Union Hill Baptist Church announces a revival starting August 15 the third Sunday of the month. Rev Roy Cook will lead services and all are invited to attend.
The Bowie A and P store opens a sizeable meat department with 30 feet of refrigerated display cases. Warren Stockton of Dublin leads the new market in Bowie with L R Ferguson of Dallas supervising the system. E A Hill the Bowie store manager says further improvements including interior and exterior painting are planned.
A revival meeting will begin Monday night August 9 at Sunset Church of Christ. Services will be held at 7 p.m. with Willard Morrow of Fort Worth leading and good singing expected.
A large Todd family reunion gathered 105 relatives Saturday and Sunday at H. J. Jolly and Clarence Scroggins homes near Sunset. Attendees came from California Oklahoma Missouri Arizona and Texas for a picnic style dinner and singing events. Oldest guest was J. P. Todd 81 of Pineville Missouri and youngest George Elbert 14 months. Next reunion planned in Plainview at J. E. Shugarts home.
Bowie city officials voted to build a 250000 gallon water tower costing about 35000 dollars to replace the present 75000 gallon reservoir. The council also ordered new pumps and transformers to double water delivery from Eagle Mountain Lake and set the tax rate at 1 dollar per 100 valuation. Guard unit members were urged to join a two week training camp August 14 29 with travel from Bowie and participation at Camp Hood near Belton.
Continental set two new drill sites in Bowie region this week for Barnett No 1 southeast of Lewis Stewart pool and two Winkle No 1 offsets southeast of Minord discovery two miles northwest of Montague. Additional locations by Russell McGuire in Ussery survey No 1 Betty G Hash and No 1 Ruby G Say with depths around 6500 feet and S W Heard No 1 east of Stoneburg drilling at 3800 feet. Shell expected to announce location on G W Cox near Cross and Miller discovery wells west of Stoneburg.
Workmen finish improvements on the Stone building at East Wise street near city limits. The property recently purchased by Tip H. Jimerson will soon open as Tip's Milk Bar No 2. The site is described as one of the most attractive of its kind in North Texas.
Former Governor Coke R. Stevenson, candidate for the U S Senate, will be in Bowie on the second Monday, Aug 9, after leading the July 24 primary. W E Benson relayed the plan after a call with Stevenson, who hopes to meet supporters while here. Revival services at First Baptist Church run through Sunday night with large crowds.
The Speake-Meyer Post of the American Legion in Bowie buys a clinic building from Dr R E Cordes. It will serve as a Legion Hall, meeting place, and recreation center for members and wives with extensive improvements planned and occupancy expected around September 1. Post Commander Tommie Whitecotton notes title papers were received.
