In Louisville the twenty mile race at the Jockey Club course saw Emma Jewett of Minnesota defeat Minnie Pinnos of Colorado by three quarters of a mile. Jewett posted 50.56 minutes to Pinnos 52.30 in front of a large crowd.
The Star prints a facsimile autograph from General Weaver dated September 13 1880, showing efforts to split the Greenbacks to aid Republicans and secure a fusion with Democrats. At Cox and Fairbanks distillery Terre Haute Indiana an 8 PM boiler explosion toppled the building. Five men were killed immediately and several injured. The blast released ninety pounds of steam and caused extensive debris. Loss valued at six thousand dollars.
Norvin Green of Western Union demands return and destruction of alleged telegrams sent by Marshall Jewell. The Democratic Committee replies that the telegrams were received in error, are public political communications, and will be used as they see fit. The dispute centers on election integrity and the Florida voting issue raised by Barnum.
In Braytonville two men Patrick Myrtie and Matthew Hackett fought over a woman who claimed to be Hackett’s wife. Myrtie was badly beaten, a rib broken, and a passerby alarmed authorities. Myrtie’s condition is serious. Hackett’s and Myrtie’s status will be reviewed today by investigators.
Sarah O'Brien, also known as Sarah Sheehan, faced the central district court in Worcester on October 23 for attempting to shoot her husband James O'Brien of Millbury. After a prior missed shot, she pursued him with a revolver until an officer arrived. The case moves to the next term of the superior court.
Thomas Pollard of 36 Coburn street returned home drunk and beat his wife. In the early hours, while the parents slept, Pollard suffocated their infant daughter by lying upon her, according to a report from Lowell dated October 24.

G A Wheeler admits killing Della J Tillson, packing her body in a trunk after she sat on his lap and argued with George W Peckham over his affections. He says jealousy and disgrace drove him to murder and concealment in a lodging house on Kearny Street.
Byron Blake, twenty-six, murdered his mother, sister, and stepfather with a knife and gun in Sheffield near Wheelock Hollow, Vermont, then hanged himself. Neighbors found the bodies after a schoolteacher saw the scene. Blake had a history of insanity and spinal illness. a prior asylum confinement was noted. The family described as quiet and industrious, with no children. The town remains in shock with a past similar sensational incident recalled.
A grape box bottom found off Sr. Joseph Mo reports a note from an orphan claiming doom aboard the Alpena with mentions of being lost at sea and a boat in pieces signed by Captain Napier. Nearby a shingle fragment bears similar broadcast of impending tragedy. Burglars travel by hand car loot depots in Haverhill NH and Vermont towns.
