A Cincinnati Sun dispatch from New York reports Porter favored to win Indiana by 6000 to 7000, with eight Republicans chosen to Congress and a Republican legislative majority likely. Additional returns place Indiana Republicans ahead, with possible Senate gain by Harrison, and statewide canvasses showing gains for Hancock with party strategists pressing for November fight.
New York October 13 reports at Democratic headquarters in Wheeling WV that Democrats concede West Virginia by 8000 while claiming a 14000 margin. Signed Alexander Campbell, Chairman State Committee.
Chairman Barnum issues a partisan appeal to Democratic and conservative voters warning of fraud and intimidation in 1876 and predicting victory with help from New York New Jersey Maine and other states. He argues Republican managers seek to corrupt polls and influence outcomes while praising anticipated nationwide support and a rightfully elected president.

A New York Post Office Box robbed of about 800000, with 60000 in cotton bills missing. A youth named Robert Smith, seen near the scene, later admitted handling envelopes and drawing 50000 in cotton bills. Also, notice of militia reorganization and Pope relief collection announcements in New York.
Denver October 16 An official copy of the Mexican railway concession granted to Palmer and Sullivan reveals the Mexican National Construction Company will build 1300 miles of narrow gauge rail with a telegraph line from Mexico City to the US frontier and Pacific. Subsidies exceed 14 million in railroad construction certificates issued as sections are completed, with payments in certificates and stringent limits on duties. The deal bars parallel lines for 65 miles on either side for the contract’s 99 year span, allows further subsidies from state governments, and grants broad rights of way and exemptions. The first section is in process. 1000 workers and 6000 tons of rails are ordered.
A great wind storm from Friday night into Saturday caused widespread damage across the Great Lakes region. Chicago saw demolished buildings and damaged elevators, while vessels were blown from piers and many ships struggled or sank. In Milwaukee and other ports, boats sought shelter as snow and high winds disrupted rail and water traffic and crews faced heavy losses.
A severe hurricane swept westward over Cincinnati causing telegraph lines to fail across regions. Communications with the Pacific coast were disrupted for days, with damage reported from Little Rock to Milwaukee and heavy losses to shipping on the lakes. Wind reached about forty miles per hour and property damage was extensive.
The storm damaged telegraph lines and unroofed the Cambridge City freight depot and the old Catholic church. Many residences suffered damage as winds wrecked structures last night.
