In Maine and New Hampshire close contests swing toward Jewell and Frank Jones earns strong support. Hancock faces a setback as rivals claim solid support in the region with a handsome vote for Jones, reflecting a tense political climate.
Despatches from pivotal states show strong indications of a Republican win and General James A. Garfield likely next president. New York is pivotal. Democratic hopes fade as totals rise nationwide. Massachusetts delegation maintains its political makeup with large overall turnout.
The Grand Total in Massachusetts with fourteen towns reports Garfield at 161,647 and Hancock 110,631 while Weaver has 3,907 and Dow 457. Garfield’s plurality stands at 61,016 as Long leads Thompson 159,203 to 109,038 with Sargent 4,269 and Almy 840. Long leads by 50,155.
Maine official results from Augusta show Garfield leading with 1125 votes in the city to 794 for Hancock and 85 for Weaver, a 246 Republican margin and a statewide majority estimate between 2000 and 5000. The Greenback ticket collapses. fusion candidates fade, while Republicans report heavy spending in urban and town contests.
Republicans rejoice and assert Garfield wins while Democrats insist early dispatches are too scant to determine the result, leaving state in contention as votes are tallied.
Manchester New Hampshire November 3 Few returns so far. Over half the state heard from telegraph towns. remainder by mail. Garfield majority unlikely to exceed 3000. Jones Democrat for governor trails Hancock. Legislature expected Republican on joint ballot. house close. Democrats claim first and third districts. Republicans dispute. Decisions due in a few days.
Wirt River Junction Vermont November 2 Indications are that the state vote will fall below September. Over half the state is heard from showing about 1500 fewer votes than the earlier election. In many towns Democrats stayed away from the polls. Garfield leads in listed towns with 30696 in Garfield Hancock Weaver totals, and Garfield's majorities in several towns are noted. The Warr River Junction report at 9 pm shows a slight decrease in the Republican majority from September.
Providence November 2 9 p m Rhode Island votes Republican with a larger majority than 1876 4923. Garfield 6833 Hancock 3150 Weaver 77. With all but six towns reported Garfield 15197 Hancock 8953 Weaver 212 a Republican edge of 2032 Nelson Aldrich elected in the first district not Jonathan Chase in the second both Republicans.
Connecticut results show Garfield leading with 65 746 of five towns heard. Bigelow leads for governor with 64 873 over English Denocrew 62 157. Republican majority in legislature 93. Congressional districts favor Republicans in Buck Phelps Wait Miles. Republican legislature ensures a Republican U S senator replacing Eaton.
New York results show Democrats winning several congress seats with large margins. Fifth district Benjamin Wood leads over Miller. sixth district Cox leads over Heneberger. seventh district Dugro defeats Astor. eighth district McCook over Davis. ninth district Fernando Wood over Hunt. tenth district Hewitt leads Talcott. eleventh district Morton leads Gerard. Grace wins close mayoralty race for Tammany with 98,001 to 96,748. Docharty elected register by about 8,000. Truay elected judge by about 2,801 with two districts missing.
Senator Hobart of New Jersey telegraphed from Jersey City stating New Jersey electors are defeated by about 2000 while Governor Potts is likely defeated by a small margin. He notes the legislature appears to have an eighteen vote Republican majority on joint ballot.
Returns indicate Hancock ahead in Delaware by about 1000 votes as early results come in. Democrats expected to win at least fourteen of twenty one state legislative seats.
In Baltimore on election day Hancock's statewide majority is estimated at 18000 with Baltimore city supporting the Democratic ticket by 10344 and the county by about 1900. Five Democrats clinch Congress seats. Republicans hold one seat in the sixth district. Total Baltimore vote reaches 55000 with Hancock at 2672 and Garfield 22328. Greenback votes appear modest across districts.
Virginia results show the Regular Democratic ticket ahead by about 6000 votes statewide. In Richmond the regular ticket leads by 2779 with George D. Wise defeating John S. Wise for Readjuster by 321.
Raleigh reports a quiet election with scattered results. The Democrats appear to gain since 1876, with Shackelford in the third district and Cox in the fourth district both believed elected. No returns were received from additional districts.
Wilmette North Carolina November 3 Returns show considerable Democratic gains over the vote of 1876. Shackleford Democrat for congress is undoubtedly elected over Canaday Republican.
Returns from across West Virginia show Nan cock leading by 17000 votes. Democrats win in the first district B Wilson, in the third John Senna, and in the second J C B Hoge.
Early returns from Charleston show four Democratic congressmen likely with one district still in doubt. In twenty counties the Democratic ticket leads by about 34 000 votes, and the thirteen counties remaining to report are expected to widen the margin.
Atlanta Ga November 2 The election shows a light vote and a Democratic majority reduced to about 45000 from 79042 in 1874 The entire delegation remains Democratic though independents defeated regulars in several districts In the seventh Felton defeats Clements in the ninth Speer defeats Bell and the ninth contest tight Alexander H Stephens faces no opposition

Conover, former Republican United States senator. Hon. R. H. M. Davidson, Democrat, is re-elected to Congress from the first district, while the second district appears to favor Jesse J. Philadelphia reports Garfield’s statewide majority estimated 30,000 to 40,000 with Republicans gaining in 31 wards and Alleghany county. Hancock leads in Oxford and Fayetteville townships as party tally rises. Berks County backs Hancock. Returns hint at a solid Republican majority statewide and a Republican legislature on joint ballot.
Cleveland despatches report Garfield at his Mentor home receiving the telegraph news as Ohio totals suggest a statewide Republican lead of 20 000 to 40 000. Hamilton county precincts show a net Republican gain of 757 from October with fifty precincts adding 1700, indicating a county majority near 5000. City gains for Republicans reach 900, while Cleveland dispatches cite Garfield at home in Mentor receiving results by telegraph.
Early returns from Chiaco Illinois report a Republican majority of 30000 with a gain of about 10000 over 1874. The tally appears nearly complete as of November 3.

Kansas City reports indicate Crisp the Democratic candidate leads in the eighth district despite Republican claims for Van Horn. Indicators point to a solid Democratic delegation, with a lighter state vote and a slightly reduced Democratic majority.
Louisville reports show Alvert Willis, Democrat, elected to Congress in the fifteenth district over Independent Democrat Hays and Republican Burns. The remainder of the delegation appears Democratic, and Hancock electors are chosen by a large majority.
In Jackson on election day, Mississippi voters favored the Democrats for president and Congress. early returns show a Democratic majority near 60,000. In the sixth district Jon K. Lynch opposed James R. Chalmers, with Chalmers declared the winner by a comfortable margin.
Mobile reports a Democratic majority of about 800 in Mobile. Overall state results show a Democratic lead of around 40,000 and all Democratic congressmen elected. The returns indicate a complete party sweep across Alabama.
An Increased Democratic Majority reports all Democratic congressional candidates elected in Arkansas and Hancock electors chosen by a larger margin than Tilden in 1876, with a likely statewide majority near 30,000.
Des Monks reports Iowa politics with a projected 10,000 Republican margin over Hancock and a 455 lead overall. Republicans expected to elect congressmen in districts two through five, seven to nine, a net gain of one. Sixth district could be close with Colts, Republican, favored over Cook, Democratic and Greenback candidate.
Scattering returns from Galveston on November 2 indicate an increased majority rising from 60,000 for Tilden in 1870 to nearly 80,000. The current congressional delegation is expected to be re elected, and Oran M. Roberts appears to be re elected governor.
Indianapolis dispatch reports Indiana will likely lose some of Porter's vote yet retain a Republican plurality near 5000. Signed by U. H. Terrell for the State Committee, the notice asserts a statewide margin for Republicans.
Cheyenne Wy November indications suggest Swan Republican will be elected to Congress, solidifying conservative representation from Wyoming. Swan leads early returns as voters finalize in the election.

early returns show Peter W. Deuster to win a 1500 vote majority in the fourth district. Richard Guenther is elected to Congress in the sixth district as Republicans gain statewide. Democrats expected to carry the third district.
Minneapolis reports a statewide Republican wave with an estimated 2500 majority. Republicans win all three congressmen, Washburn leads by 8000, Strait by 5000 in the second district, Dunnell by 600 in the first. Garfield carries the city by 2500, Washburn by 3000, and the legislature remains overwhelmingly Republican.

The couple are first cousins and this is Woods second wife and Fisher's third husband. The report also recalls Mrs Stewart reunited with her Chicago family after being presumed dead for nineteen years.
In Leesburg Georgia State Senator J P Tyson dies after a feud with J F Calloway escalates to violence. A coroner s jury rules voluntary manslaughter and Calloway is arrested. Also the article notes Sitting Bull s potential surrender to the United States or exile to Canada amid border tensions.
